Problem with setting up wireless network

I have a laptop and PC. I want to set up wireless network so that I can connect to my created wireless network that is on my main PC. (Internet cable just goes straight into pc port, i have no additional modem). Problem is when I plug router cables and configure it (sometimes even the web management page does not work) , I can see the network from my laptop, but I cant connect , it shows that no cable in WAN port is plugged in. However, when I do plug internet cable in WAN and the other cable to pc port and router lan port, I have no internet at all. I know this sounds messy but I dont know how else better to describe it. Thanks in advance! (I am completely new to this ) . Should I just have bought wireless adapter like this TL-WN723N - Welcome to TP-LINK instead?
