Cant share external Hard drive "Incorrect Function"

So I have a Windows 7 64bit desktop with 2 external hard drives that have shared over my network so I can view the files on my laptop(win 7 64bit) and watch movies and such on my xbox via windows media center.

I recently purchased a WD Elements 2TB external Hard Drive.
I connect the new drive to my desktop along with the other 2 external hard drives and functions with no problems until I try to share it on my network.

My procedure for sharing was opening my computer, right clicking on the hard drive, clicking share with.., advanced sharing, (in the sharing tab) advanced sharing again, click the share this folder box and hitting apply. And I get this error, "An error occurred while trying to share G. Incorrect function. The shared resource was not created at this time."

I was however able to add the new external hard drive to my media library in windows media center so my xbox can see the new hard drive no problem.
So now I need to get the drive on the network so I can see it on my laptop.

Whats more, If I disconnect the hard drive from my desktop, and connect it to my laptop, it will let me share it and I can see it from my desktop. (Baffles me...)

Any help or ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

I see you have the same issue as I do and are getting about the same help I have been getting, NONE
We will probably find out "Microsoft" will want to charge us extra if we want to share more than one way, they give us ONE free sharing but not 2 without more money.

It might be that the laptop already has a "G" drive so can't see the new Ext HD which is also "G" drive. It is always much better to give your external hard drives dedicated letters up near the top end of the alphabet like "X", "Y", "Z". Then there is no confusion when you start to add card readers and USB sticks.
Jagman 55. I have checked your previous posts and I can't find any post referring to this type of problem so please don't moan about the lack of response to a NON EXISTENT thread of yours! Also please do not highjack somebody elses thread, it only causes confusion. Start a new topic and someone will help you!

For both posters with this problem. Repartition the drive first to remove any and all drive manufacturers software. Format it NTFS and then try to share it. If the sharing again fails connect the drive to a different USB port (could be you have to many devices on one hub).

    trying to share usb drives

i have 10 fantom usb drives attached to my HP desktop. Home Premium 64bit, system. I use it as my "HD" server and then remote into my desktop from my laptop. Sharing drives has worked for over 2 years. then one boot and whamo, several drives will not share any more.

I have tried, almost all of the "letters", changed permissions to "everyone" so that is not it, and tried about everything, firewalls, viruses, etc.

my posts on this and others are very old as have given up several times trying to get to work. some posts are old enough to be under an old email address.

it is frustrating when the error message says absolutely nothing indicating what MAY be the issue. error messages are supposed to tell you enough to help you solve the problem as the programmer/developer usually knows what the condition is when HE POSTS the error message and include an error type, where the error occurred, etc.

this one was posted by a VERY bad programmer, " Cant share external Hard drive "Incorrect Function" , NOT very much of a "technical" explanation. My first computer and my program i wrote was in 1962 so it is not like i am some rookie. my error messages always told you why my program could not continue and a number, and where to look for an answer " incorrect function"?? and " at this time?" is just plain crappola.

But thanks for asking. you must have detected my frustration about this. but then again, this is not my favorite OS as i am an ex-UNIX SA and that OS rarely if EVER fails.
