    Windows answers to Ping.

Hi, I have been playing around with Win10 ala stripping out services and Microsoft things I don't want etc.
Whilst I did this I went to " Shields up " which told me Win10 was running in Stealth mode which was OK by me. However, it was answering to ping. I then tried the same on my WIn7 comp and found that also answered to a ping.
I checked the Firewall, File and print sharing ICMPv4 settings and they were all off .
I'm at a loss as to what else to look for, would appreciate any help or tips.
    cheers,
    Eddie.

This thread will explain in detail what it's all about
[Rant] GRC's Shields Up! and "true stealth" - firewall test or harmful FUD? | Wilders Security Forums
It includes a very nice summary in posts #5 and #18 which explains that you actually reveal your presence by not answering pings (by blocking echo reply).

A question to you - are you sure you've tested Windows, with no router or modem in the way, or your router? Two different things, but the bottom line is don't bother with all that "stealth" stuff. Just block the inbound TCP connection attempts in the router since those you don't want.
