Errors with starting Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter

    Hi guys,

I'm pulling my hair out on this one; hopefully you can help me. I'm trying to create a virtual wifi AP using the Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter and the netsh wlan command line context, but it's giving me a headache.

"netsh wlan show drivers" in the command line includes the output line "Hosted network supported: Yes" so my wireless card should be supported, correct? I can setup the hostednetwork fine with "netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=blah key=blah" but when I try to start it with "netsh wlan start hostednetwork" I get the following output:

"The hosted network couldn't be started. The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation."

My network adapter is a Rosewill RNX-N1 which contains a Ralink 2870 chipset (that chipset has been confirmed to support hostednetwork).

    Any suggestions?

I can't say what the problem might be but the link below shows two methods for setting up a hosted wireless network. You can also try the link for connectify software which is just a user interface that makes it easier for some people.

It's important to note that a hosted wireless network is made to share a wireless connection with other wireless devices.

The hosted wireless network isn't made to share out through an Ethernet connection in any way shape or form, though it may be possible to do so you may end up with an unreliable network and there are no standard tutorials to set that up.
