Windows 7: Excessive time to log onto another drive.

I have 3 Machines all running Windows 7 and are connect by a Home Group Network.

Using Windows Explorer I go to a Shared drive on another machine. Each File is from 1 Gb to 5 Gb in size. I takes ages ( about 15 minutes or so) for my machine to display the contents of the drive from the other Machine.

All I can do is to watch the green line at the top of the screen.

If after it is loaded and I select another drive then go back I again I have to wait for the screen to refresh again.

The Machine I am working on is 64bit and the network machine is 32 bit.

Is there a setting or some process that will speed up the connection read time.

Are you trying to access the shared drives using a wireless or wired connection? Have you tried both?

Also, you may try accessing the shared drives by using this method:
Click on the Start button then type \\ComputerName\SharedDrive or \\IPAddress\SharedDrive.

One Wired which is good, and the other Wireless which is slow. But the difference is with the wired it is instant the warless can take 5 minutes or more.

I have been using the word Drive when I should have used Folder.

I thought the answer would be simple but as it is not I shall gather some more facts and repost.

Wireless connection will always be slow compared to wired. It will help if your router supports N mode as well as your Wi-Fi adapter. Please try the work around that I gave you to access your shared folder.

I have just done the Following.

First I pluged in a cable. The result is that it shows the contents of the Folder much faster. However the speed is unacceptable. Even though the wired connection is about 10 times faster it is too slow.

With the cable still connected I did as you suggested. It finds the folders fast enough but using the same method to view the files there was no noticable difference.

BTW. The wireless was disabled during these tests.

We can try making some changes on the Link Duplex & Speed of your network adapter from Device Manager. If your network adapter supports 1Gbps Full duplex try changing it to this mode (it's default to Auto negotiation), you may also try switching to 100Mbps Full duplex. Having a Cat5e or Cat6 network cables also help, do you know which ones are you using, it is labeled on the cable itself.

If you have Cat5e or Cat6 cables it will help, also having gigabit devices, router with gig ports, network adapters and gig network switches, this will all help with the transfer rates in your wired connection and again for wireless connection, an N technology also helps. For now, you may try my other suggestion on changing the Link Speed & Duplex whether or not your network adapter has the 1Ggps, try the 100mbps full duplex.

I've given you all different types of suggestions, if you can afford to upgrade and invest on the latest technology it is a great option.

The logic is not good.

A slower machine connects within seconds while the Newer and faster Machine takes ages. There must be something we are missing here.

I don't believe it is hardware. I feel that it must be something like indexing but I really don't know.

I will try to find some more examples that may help.
