Connected to network but get red x on bottom right screen

I am connected to a network but it still shows a red x and says im not connected in other areas. I am obviously using the internet and troubleshooter doesn't find anything wrong.

also at one point i did have virtual box and vmware installed and i thought this could be the problem and removed all traces and drivers of them but to no avail

The pics will help explain all this...

pic of the red x and showing i am connected yet not connected.

and last i have read on several threads that network location and list could be turned off and as you can see here they are not.

this is really bugging me and i cant find any solution or answer so any input or ideas will be greatly appreciated... Thanks!
