I had run sfc/ scannow command earlier from some other post n also created a txt file for outcome, but the scan dint come up with any issues, i have MSE and windows defender, i uninstalled MSE and tried turning on the services but even that failed. Btw the notification area showed me that kaspersky was out of date and needed to be updated, i had stopped using kaspersky long back though, it was fully uninstalled. also now when my netbook boots up it gives me an option to boot with Ubuntu netbook and windows 7, ubuntu was uninstalled few months back!!! When i try booting through Ubuntu it says that system needs to be recovered.

you should make another topic for this. You system is probably still using grub as the boot loader. I know there are some tools to fix this but i have never used them.

or check this out.

I think the fix Jacee advised work, not sure though. I applied the fix restarted the computer, however i could still see the red cross in notification area. After a while when i looked at it , the red cross just disappeared. I restarted the PC couple of times just to be sure abt it . The firewall was working all fine. Is there any way to find wat exactly fixed the problem? By checking logs or something likewise ?

Jacee adivsed you to run a hotfix. Actually you could have done it manually

Let me fix it myself

Set the service and any dependent services to run under the NT AUTHORITY\LocalService account.
For example, for the Windows Firewall service, follow the steps:
1. Click Start, type "Services.msc” in the Search programs and files box, and then press ENTER,
2. Locate and double click the Windows Firewall service.
3. Click the Log On tab,
4. In the This account text box, type “NT AUTHORITY\LocalService”,
5. Set both Password fields blank,
6. Click Apply and then OK,
7. Repeat these steps for the Base Filtering Engine service.
8. Restart both services.

Did you check those services earlier? Was logon account “NT AUTHORITY\LocalService” ?
