    Windows 7 Share

    Hello All,

I'm trying to access a share on my Windows 7 machine (local subnet access is fine no problems there) I have an environment that has several different subnets and whenever I try to access that share from a subnet different than my Windows 7 machine it doesn't work. I "KNOW" the firewall is the issue. When I turn off the firewall I can access the share without problems. But the challenge here is to leave the firewall on and get access from that separate network by providing the right credentials.

Does anyone know what setting(s) in the Windows Firewall enables file sharing from a separate subnet?

Any help is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

You're right. The default behavior of the Windows firewall only allows computers on the same subnet to access shared files. If you go into the advanced firewall configuration and edit the properties of the rules dealing with file and printer sharing, you can remove that restriction.

Specifically you will want to edit the "Scope" to allow your actual subnet address range rather than "Local Subnet".

Where exactly in the firewall configuration can you change the "scope". If you can point that out in more detail that would be greatly appreciated. :)

    Thanks sup3rsptrt!

    1. click start and type firewall in the search field.
    2. click advanced firewall configuration
    3. on the left pane click inbound
    4. in the middle pane right-click on a rule labeled file and printer sharing and go properties
    5. click the scope tab
    6. edit the scope where it says "Local subnet" change it to be "Any" or preferrably the custom address range of your subnet
    7. repeat steps 4-6 for every rule labeled file and printer sharing

believe it or not this used to be a MUCH simpler process in Windows XP
