Windows 7 64bit Printer Sharing

hi, i cannot seem to get my Printer sharing ( Using HP PSC 1610 ALL-IN-ONE). My printer is connected through usb on windows xp 32bit and want to share printer on windows 7 x64bit windows vista x32bit.


Ive set up the sharing part on xp and windows 7 side, but i cannot seem to connect it. The problem may be that whenever i click on x64 driver to install ( I click sharing in my printer (HP PSC 1610 ALL-IN-ONE ) and click additional Drivers and tick x64 and click next it prompts me to install the driver using a cd..ive tried windows vista 32bit windows xp 32bit windows 7 x64 bit..no luck).



So i try moving the printer on windows 7. It installs the drivers x64bit one, The version is HP PSC 1600 SERIES VERSION 6.1.7600.16385 installed on 64bit as it says in Administrative Tools > Print Management > Printer servers > Comp name( Local) > Drivers and it says x64 and if i wanna add a driver it still ask me for a cd when i tick x32bit driver.



Ive tried so many methods to connect my printer over lan..Local port etc nothing works.


Can someone give me instructions on how to fix this so i can share printer over my network.

This is the part i get stuck on..when i click on x86 or x64 it ask for driver..so if my printer was ocnnected to windows 7 x64 bit i needed to install x86 so it would work on xp and Vice versa

ok this is what helped me to install additional drivers.

1. download the 32 bit drivers, extract them to a folder if you can. i could not do this and kept getting an error saying windows couldn't run a 32 bit progy etc. if you can extract drivers to a folder skip this next paragraph.

if not you need to try and open them, get the error message, and then wait. don't close anything. press Win+R to open run window and type "C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Local\Temp\" find most recent folder that doesn't start with "{" or what have you. mine was "WZSE1.TMP" you should see files and folders that have your printer name and hopefully one that says "drivers."

2. find the .inf file (mine was MP210PR.inf) for your printer and open in notepad. Windows 7 seems to rename printers for its own liking. i have a Canon PIXMA MP210 and Win 7 thinks it's a Canon Inkjet MP210 series Printer. this is the problem. in notepad find wherever your printer name is in parenthesis and correct the name. this took me a few tries to get right. i had to go into Device Manager and copy the name from there. for example
my .inf file read this

Windows2000
[Canon]
"Canon MP210 series Printer" = CNM_0316XP,

i had to change it to this

Windows2000
[Canon]
"Canon Inkjet MP210 series" = CNM_0316XP,

you might have to play around with the wording (like including or excluding the word "Printer") to get it right. i had to correct the name in two places in the .inf file, one under Windows2000 and another under Windows XP. (i only changed my MP210PR.inf and not my MP210SC.inf because frankly i couldn't find my printer name anywhere in that gibberish)

3. save file. copy location in address bar, and paste into the "Additional Drivers" browser. ex "C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Local\Temp\WZSE2.TMP\mp210swin101ea24\Driver"
this let Win7 recognized the drivers for me.

4. by this point i still hadn't closed the original error message about running a 32bit program, so i hope you haven't. i don't know if it makes a difference or not; i wasn't willing to test it. that being said, jump over to your XP machine, find your printer on the network and it should give you the option to install drivers. i don't know how XP will do this because i was doing this with a Vista laptop and all i had to do was double click my printer.

anyways that helped me to actually share between the two OS's. now if you can actually get the printer to print something let me know. for some reason Windows 7 thinks my printer is "Ready" when it's off. i haven't actually been able to print anything from either computer. the printer queue just says "Spooling" and "Printing" but nothing happens. i turned the printer off and Win 7 still thinks it's online. so good luck with that. man i hope this helped.

bitchbecool, i just registered to say well done man, you are a genius. i have no idea how you worked out to use the temp files but it worked, i am now printing from a laptop running vista 32 wirelessly connected to a windows 7 connected to a a canon inket mp210, i spent ages downloading loads of different drivers, checking out microsoft and canon support, no luck till i came across your post. i hope you got yours working. by the way it DOES matter if you close the installer before your finished editing the inf in the temp directory (if you close it/exit the temp files are deleted so you need to keep it open).

I am having a similar problem and I hope I am not hijacking this thread. We have 2 machines; dell 540 desktop running win 7 64 bit, and dell 1535 laptop win 7 32bit (both Home Premium). Two printers are attached to the 540: HP 4000 laser jet (USB) and recently an HP 8500 MFP (USB). All was working fine. We could print from either printer from either machine. This is accomplished through a wireless router. I then had a problem with the desktop and had to reinstall WIN 7 64 bit. Now I can print to either printer from the desktop. The only problem I have is that I cannot print to the HP 8500 from the laptop. I can print to the HP4000 laser from the laptop. The laptop sees the HP 8500 through the Control Panel and the network display but when I print a test page I received the message ‘Test Page failed to print…’ also the icon for the HP 8500 appears to be grayed out. I am running the current HP print drivers for the 64 bit OS (ver 14). Yesterday I opened a chat session with HP support. After explaining multiple times the issue, his solution was to connect the laptop to the HP 8500 when I wanted to print!!!!!

I have checked the home group and I am sharing printers on both machines. I have followed HP’s direction on reinstalling the drivers and I get the same results. The 8500 is a wireless MFP and I know I could either use that method or connect to the router (of course I think it would work).

Any suggestions? If you think I should open a new thread I can do that.

Thanks loginix, I will explore that option. I put in a call to HP support and worked with them for over an hour before I had to leave. HP is calling today so maybe I will get it done sooner.

Well it is working now. The first Dell support person did not return my call. So I called them the support staff opened a new call since the first support person did not log the activities he had performed. I will admit it took over an hour to get things working but in the end I learned a few things (now I can really be dangerous). She uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled the drivers a couple of times. Then she retrieved some clean-up utilities from the install CD, ran what I believe a Level 3 uninstall, reloaded the drivers from the CD and all began working! I decided to go the Wireless route and that worked fine. Originally I was using the USB connection and used print sharing; that is what was not working. After I re-booted both machines the laptop reports it has found a printer and would I like to install? Me being a glutton for punishment I said yes. Well now on the laptop I have 2 Office Jet printers. One through the wireless and the other through the USB port. I am not going to touch a thing, all is working and that is enough.

I now believe that all that was necessary was to thoroughly clean the laptop of the original drivers and reinstall the HP software. BTW version 13 works with WIN 7 32 bit.
