Remote Desktop Connection just started Disconnecting within minutes

I am using the Windows-7 Remote Desktop Connection tool from my (client) desktop computer (Windows 7) to work on my basement located home media center and security monitor (target) computer (Windows 7 Pro). Both machines are up-to-date on all Windows downloads within the last 4 days. Both machines are 64 bit.

This has been working without any problems for about a year, but a day ago it stopped working, within 0.5-5 minutes after the connection was established. All of a sudden I am getting an error message that states . . .

"Your Remote Desktop session has ended. Another user connected to the remote computer, so your connection was lost. ..."

Both computers have a single User Account (Admin) with full privileges. There are no other accesses actually occurring at the target computer.

Both machines are connected on a Cisco LAN with high bandwidth and perfect signal strengths.

As I mentioned before this is a new issue that is only days old. All has worked perfectly for a year before.

Also, because of interactions with my security system, 3 days ago I disabled Automatic Updates on the target machine, preferring to periodically do them manually at appropriate times. So there should not have been an update causing this new behavior all of a sudden.

Since I depend on this (Now non-functional) remote access a lot, any assistance or ideas would be much appreciated!!!!

Welcome to TSF,

It wouldn't hurt changing the password just in case another User is trying to use Remote Desktop, you'll never know. Is your network secured, do you have a wireless network?

Thanks. Good thinking, but unrelated to this I had just changed the password the day before.

My network is wireless, highly secure and a network within a network within a network, thus very layered with multiple levels of firewalling.

Since I am the network administrator for the highest level LAN I also have monitoring tools running 24/7 to track usage of all resources.

Nothing unusual shows up at all.

I'm pretty confident that whatever is going on is NOT really caused by another user logon to my system.

Have you also done a System Restore, restore it a working state before the issue started?

How about temp disabling AV or Security Software?

Yes to all of the above. Except Restore indicated it was not able to "repair" any issues. (I've also had strange goings on for the last several months, where parts of Windows things disappear). For instance, when I attempt to Show the Task Manager, I ONLY get the Tasks. There are NO tabs showing so I cannot look at Services or Processes, etc.

Remember this just started several days ago and nothing changed on the target machine. I even had autoupdates turned off so there shouldn't have been any new sw installed even.

I understand about depending on Remote Access, I use it daily also for work purpose. If you have tried various troubleshooting tasks and nothing works, perhaps it's worth trying Team Viewer Free or LogMeIn Free, both are great remote software.

Thanks for the idea. Unfortunately I ran LogMeIn for several years and replaced it with Windows 7 Pro because every time you exited LogMeIn the controlled PC logged the account off and then sat in Login Mode waiting for someone to enter the password to log onto the machine.

I never could find a way around that hangup. When you disconnect from the client machine with Windows 7 Pro it nicely goes right back to the normal user state. Since this is the household control center computer, it was a BIG pain to have to keep logging back into it. Thus I hope to make Windows 7 Pro work again, as perfectly as it was for the last year up until a week ago!

Just discovered an interesting clue. The disconnect seems to repeatedly occur 2 minutes/5 seconds after the connect.

I looks like something is getting timed out that wasn't several days ago when it all worked OK!

Awesome recommendation!

I just downloaded and tried TeamViewer and LOVE IT!

Just changed everything over to it. Now, not only PC to PC but iPad and iPhone remote access control too.

I think I'm about to be a very happy camper!
