Windows 7 64bit will not connect to the internet

Here is one that i have not been able to figure out at all. Now i am not a tech. by any means but i get by. I have a home built computer with an amd quad core and 4 gigs of ram. That being said i opted for vista 64 bit and had no end of trouble trying to get a linksys wireless usb adapter to work finally i purchased a belkin n wireless adapter and it worked kind of, it would drop randomly. I then tried WIndows 7 thinking all my trouble running a 64 bit system are a history, not so.

Hardware: Belkin wireless n adapter F8053 ver 4,WRT54G Linksys,Vonage phone adapter Motorola VT2142.

Now the problem. For a couple days i got the Internet to work with windows 7 then it just suddenly stopped. I says connected but no Internet access and a few time in the troubleshooter it says unable to communicate with dns server. I have found that when i have the vonage box unplugged windows 7 works great, i am typing on my windows 7 comp now tirelessly. But as soon as i plug my vonage box into the router my wireless will not connect to the Internet.

I plug the vonage into the router in the network jacks my connection goes wall---modem---wireless router with vonage box plugged into this and then my computers are connecter wireless.

One thing to throw into the mix i have a windows xp laptop and it can connect to the Internet at any time no matter what i have plugged into the router.

I have been pulling my hair what little i have of it out for a few days any help is very much appreciated.

Question: Can you go onto the Internet with Both computers at the same time?
So unplug your vonage box and see if you can connect to the Internet with your Windows 7 PC and Windows XP laptop..

Also can you get into your wireless router from you Windows 7 PC
usually the address is 192.168.0.1 type that in your web browser's URL

    What are your results??

    When unplugged

Yes when the vonage box is unplugged i can connect with both computers. When it is plugged in i can connect with the xp laptop, and if the xp laptop is not connected i still can not connect with the windows 7 computer.

Yes i can connect to the router page as well, just nothing beyond the router.

Question: Do you have Static IP addresss??
Like for example if you Labtop is 192.168.0.2
    Vonage is 192.168.0.3
    Windows 7 192.168.0.3
That would cause issues on your Windows 7 PC not being able to connect to the internet.

This isn't helpful, but, Win7 and wireless don't mix. Driver support is dreadful, especially on x64.

    not a static ip

No i do not use a static IP.

One other thing to note is before i went to the 64 bit and had two xp computer i had no problem what so ever.

And I have tried it with the phone off and just the vonage box hooked up no luck there.

    Hi all
I have some Bad news for you I'm afraid.

Some network cards and possibly Routers just DON'T work with W7 X64 even though they give no error on the computer hardware listing and install correctly on W7.

For example I have a laptop with an in built via velocity family ethernet gigabit nic. This just refuses to connect to the Internet (unknown network and won't get a proper IP address). No amount of fiddling with this will make it work (switching off IPV6 / registry hacks etc etc. Believe me I've tried them all).

It works fine on XP (64 bit edition and standard XP) but only on W7 x-86.

Some wireless cards also exhibit the same procedure - the Wireless card in the laptop works fine 99% of the time but very occasionally I go into some public Internet access area like a bar and it doesn't work and I have to re-boot into XP. - So some Routers / nic (both wired and wireless) have problems with W7 x-64.

These seem to be fairly random so you just will need to google to see what works and what doesn't.

I solved my wired NIC card by getting a USD USB ===>LAN adapter -- costs around 3 - 5 USD and very common.

Perhaps you should consider getting a USB wireless adapter for W7 X-64.

The router is unlikely to be the problem unless its very old - but there are some routers that can give problems.

An easy way to test to see if the Router is 64 bit compatable is just to load up any version of a Linux Live CD and see if you can connect to the internet.

    Cheers

My 64bit professional works flawlessly on wireless when I installed it. Are you on static IP by any chance?

    Hi there

Without knowing the hardware this reply doesn't actually say anything.

It's like saying I can't install W7 on my computer.

Different hardware will produce different results. If you don't believe that try putting Diesel into a Petrol Engine and then say "My car doesn't work".

    Cheers

    View my profile then.

And for the my router, I didn't have to change a thing. Windows 7 asked me for my network key and it connected fine after that.
