What else can I do to fix my internet?

Hello. So, since I moved into my new house in October, my internet has been crap. After several months, I decided my router might be the problem (an old model I literally dug out of the trash a couple years ago). So I bought a new, expensive router and now it's worse than ever. I get a couple of minutes of good internets and then the whole thing starts crapping the bed. I can't stay on XBox Live for more than about five minutes and have to constantly run network diagnostics. Here's my setup:

    -NetgearR6300 router
    -Motorola Surfboard SB6121 modem
    -XBox plugged directly into router
    -Laptop and tablet using WiFi

Definitely the router since my laptop is plugged into my modem right now and it works beautifully. So far, I've unplugged everything and plugged it back in, updated all the firmware, changed the MTU size to 1400 (I don't even know what that means), and checked the channels (mine's the only one on channel 1). I've ran speed tests both plugged into the modem and from the router and the results are dramatically different (15 Mbps vs. 1-2Mbps). I am out of ideas. I would do a factory reset but it was like this out of the box. Any ideas??

So just so I'm understanding everything properly, hardwired works okay (around 15 mbps) and WiFi is next to useless?

Does the hardwired always work fine and the WiFi never work decently? What Internet speed do you pay for? Have you contacted them?
