gigabit ethernet speed questions, do you get 3/4 or 1/2 or full speeds

Is a gigabit connection a pure connection at a gigabit OR
does the connection adjust speeds lower or higher or what?

If you look into the connection data and see no errors and your connected at a gigabit rating does this mean that is a real gigabit or has it negotiated some other speed rating.

It would depend on if something on the network is limiting your speeds. Typically you dont have anything on a home network until you reach your ISP and they will probably be throttling your speeds.

It also depends on other devices. If you have a switch or router that only has a 100mbps port then your gigabit port on your PC will only work at 100mbps.

You will be getting full gigabit.

Remember that its gigabit not gigabyte, so for file transfer speeds the theoretical speeds is 128 MBps.

Ok, so then if I get a gigabit connection, which I do get, it is not worth changing the cable from cat 5e to cat7 under the house and thru the walls as the speed wont get any better, is that true?
A gigabit is a gigabit is a gigabit and any speed deviations differences are caused by motherboards, CPU, hard drive, some running process ?

Using Lan Speed Test, I have seen various speeds change anywhere from 25MB/sec to 50 MB/sec all on the same hardware.

cat 5e is capable of gigabit speeds, but there are differences, unless you plan on installing a 10gigabit network i dont see the point of using cat7.

I did switch my cabling from cat5e to cat 6 since theres are a few chev65 sums it up here perfectly. Fastest Wired Router
