Installing updates (1 of 9) but no Internet connection

Windows tells me not to unplug or power off machine. But I think I have no internet connection, so how can Windows install 9 updates?

In "Wireless Network Connection Status" I saw:

    IPV4 Connectivity No Network Access
    IPV6 Connectivity No Network Access
    Media (something) Disabled

I cannot connect to my wireless network. Other computers on the home wireless network work fine. This makes me suspect a failed wireless adapter card in my PC. I did not check Device Manager for a bad adapter before I ordered "Shutdown".

Can I power off the PC anyway? Will something bad happen if I do? If I shutdown and power back up, what can I do to fix the "No Network Access" problems and go on line? Troubleshoot adapter through Device Manager? Any other ideas or precautions?

How did you check for updates in the first place if you have no internet connection?

I don't. They accumulate somehow while I am logged on to the Internet. When I shutdown (usually because my PC is running slow or locked up), the last thing Windows does before it goes belly up is "install updates". No idea why that happens. Anyway, if you shutdown and have no Internet connection and can't complete the updates and Windows tells you not to unplug or switch off, you're screwed.

Except you're not. I looked up the problem on google and somebody said just shutdown and power back up and things will probably be Ok. So I did, and so far, they are.

I think you may be confused by the update process. The Windows updates have already been downloaded by the time you get the "Do not turn off" message. It then proceeds to install the updates "Installing 1 of 9" message, which do not require any internet connection.

Just let it finish installing, and it will turn itself off automatically.

    Thanks, Golden

Yes, I was confused. The update thing was hung for some reason and because I had no Internet access, I thought it might be hung because of that.

I shutdown, powered back up, and now things seem to be working fine.
