Default Gateway Not Available and/or DNS Server Not Responding

Sometimes I have internet connection for a few seconds, if I'm lucky maybe three minutes. I can get two different messages when I run the Windows Troubleshooting option: "DNS server isn't responding" or "The default gateway is not available." This has been going on about a week. I have not made any changes to my laptop, not even a Windows update, or a driver update, or anything like that.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L655 laptop. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I live in a rural area that does not have home telephone or internet lines, so I access the internet using a 3G data card. There is only one small spot in my house that receives a signal so I have a Zoom Travel Router that I plug the data card into and then use my computer in a different room in the house. This setup has been working great for almost two years.

Below is the coding in the ipconfig file. It's pretty short. The default gateway is the ip address for the Zoom Router as provided in the User Manual. I talked to my ISP provider and they said they could only help me if I plugged the data card directly into the computer. They could not or would not help me if I used a Wifi router.

If you tell me I need to make changes to the ipconfig file, then you will have to tell me how to do that. I'm not afraid to make changes, I'm just not techie enough that I know how to do it.

Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. I hate being without the internet.

Just as a test, what happens if you plug your 3G data card directly into your computer - do you get disconnected?

It does connect easier and stays connected longer but still not like it did a month ago. The problem with the signal location is the reason that I don't just use the 3G data card in the laptop. It's difficult to answer emails when you're five feet up on a ladder. LOL. Would router problems cause the error messages I'm getting? I've had routers that have lasted 10 years so I would expect this one to be good after only 14 months.

Can you stay connected with the laptop outside? If so, then there is nothing wrong with the laptop or the data card... the signal coming into your home might have changed. That signal might not be as strong now. Other signals might be stronger than now.

Just this minute is the first time I've been able to connect all day. It is dark here now and not safe to be outside after dark, so I'll check that out tomorrow. I know the ISP was putting up some new towers so maybe they have changed where the signal is coming from. Thanks for the suggestion as I'd run out of ideas.

If it turns out that there is no longer a place in your home where you can get a decent/consistent 3G signal, then you can ask the ISP if they plan on addressing that. You might even talk them into a refund or reduced rates until they get this fixed for you, That mostly depends on where they claim to offer service.

If they can restore the signal in your home, then you can switch back to your clever use of the travel router. Sadly, all of this might take weeks - hence the need to discuss a refund or a rate reduction.
