Can't connect wireless or update windows 7 ultimate

I'm a local tech guy, just work from home and get a few customers a month. I have a problem that I can't figure out. First I can't update windows because it says the service isn't running. And I can't get the wireless to connect to anything, it tries using any connection then says 'the connection was unsuccessful'. I've looked around the internet and did lots of different suggestions, like reset winsock and related internet fixing stuff. I finally came to maybe the source. It is a service called "network location awareness", I can't start it at all and it seems to be important. What I don't understand is why wireless and windows updates are both not working. Wired works perfectly.

I've done all forms of virus checks from every website's forums and usually the virus part of my work is what I'm best at.

Forgive me for my lack of proper lingo, I just fix them

Dell Studio laptop (I couldn't find any model number on it), running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Let me know of anything else you need from me to help

The wireless may seem like a driver issue maybe try an update of the driver. If you did one and the problem happened since then try a driver roll back.

For the windows update go to the services.msc - scroll down to the windows update and check the status on the service and post back.

I have took this from an article that i have just seen. The method 3 has seem to of work for this person:

You can try the following steps and see if it helps.
Method 1: Let’s uninstall the Network Adapter from device manager and reinstall it.
a. Click Start and type “devmgmt.msc” (without quotes) and press Enter.
b. Expand Network Adapters and Right click on the adapter select Uninstall.
c. Restart the computer. Windows should install the drivers required.
You can refer to the dapter manufacturer website and install the latest available drivers.

Method 2: Try resetting TCP\IP and check if the issue persists.
You can refer to the following article to reser TCP\IP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

Method 3: Reset Winsock
a. Click Start and type cmd in the start search box.
b. From the programs list right click on cmd and select Run as Administrator.
c. Type netsh winsock reset in the Command Prompt, and then press the Enter key.
d. Do the same process for refreshing the TCP/IP just replace the typed command with
netsh interface ipv4 reset press Enter
netsh interface ipv6 reset press Enter
ipconfig /flushdns press Enter
e. Restart your Computer.

Hope this information is helpful.

The Windows Update service is set to auto but I can't start it. I actually already did those 3 methods prior to writing here. I found them as I searched for help. Didn't help at all
