I changed my IPv4 DNS "obtain automatically" to manual a few weeks ago. Since then, I have tried to change it back to obtain manually. However, it keeps on changing back to manual, preventing me from connecting to the internet until i change it to obtain automatically.
Is there any way to keep the setting permanently on automatic?

If you don't have a DNS typed into the IPv4 properties then it automatically would use the one the ISP has set up, there is usually no need to type in any DNS unless you have a preferred one.
Is this DNS problem keeping you from connecting to the internet?
I find this link when I search, quite a few have this problem and it's caused from either a virus or third party networking software, but in these cases something was over riding the manual DNS setting.

Im afraid that link was not useful. It tells me to change the IPV4 DNS to "obtain automatically". that is why im asking for a solution. i change it and a few hours/days later, it changes back to the specific DNS ip address. there was a link on that page, but it was broken
and yes, it prevents me from connecting to the internet, since most non-college routers dont reach into the center of campus, where i would connect to it
Like I said, it's either a virus redirecting your DNS or you may have some factory bloatware causing the problem in which case the bloatware needs to be removed.
Running a virus scan would be my first option, malware bytes is a good place to start.
