Dependency service failed to start. No internet access.

Hiya.

I am typing this from my laptop using wifi at the same home that my PC is having trouble identifying a network. It has a pop up for turning on windows firewall, when I try that, it says "action center can't turn on windows firewall", trying to turn it on manually runs me in circles. When I hit use recommended settings, it tells me it can not change some of my settings. Error code 0x8007042c.

In my network and sharing center, it can not identify a network. It says "dependency service or group failed to start".

I have to run right now. If anybody needs any more information, please tell me what I need to do and I should post back tonight or tomorrow afternoon. I'd love if anyone could contribute!

Thanks a lot,
Nick

Hi Nickmaho and welcome to Seven Forums:

There could be more than just the service so try what is posted on this please and post back. Try the service's first and then try what is recommended here. Hope this helps

@Thread starter, if nothing works, try this as well:

Press Win+R and type "services.msc" and click OK.

Now find "Remote procedure call (RPC)", double click it and make sure the startup type is set to "automatic". Also make sure the services "Base filtering engine" and "Windows firewall" are set to "automatic" startup type. Then restart the system.

information   Information
Windows firewall service depends on Base filtering engine service to work and BFE service depends on RPC service to work correctly

*EDIT* - I decided to just reinstall windows.. Problem is fixed. I'll keep my response just in case it is useful to anyone else who has the same issue.

Thanks for the speedy responses guys!

Okay, I was following the steps on the first link that benjy206 suggested;

I typed in sfc /scannow and it said that "windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations".

So then I followed the steps below, typing in "netsh advfirewall reset"; it said "an error occured while attempting to contact the Windows Firewall service. Make sure that the service is running and try your request again."

I then typed in "net start mpsdrv" and it said "the requested service has already been started, more help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2182"

I typed "NET HELPMSG 2182" and it read "the requested service has already been started",

So then I followed the steps from there, typing in "net start bfe" and it attempted to start the base filtering engine service, but then said "the base filtering engine service could not be started, A system error has occurred, system error 5 has occurred, access is denied."

Carrying on, typing net start mpssvc resulted in "the dependency service or group failed to start"

I then finished the last step, typing in regsvr32 firewallapi.dll and it brought up a window with a X saying "the module "firewallapi.dll\ " failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at the specific path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .dll files. The specified module could not be found"

So that was what my result is for the first reply...

As for RoboticArm:

the RPC is set to automatic, and is started.
The BFE is set to automatic, was set to stopped. Attempted to start it, it begins but gives me a window saying "windows could not start the BFE service on local computer, error 5:access is denied"
The windows firewall is set to automatic, also stopped, when attempted to start it brings error 1068 about the dependency service or group failing to start.

Maybe this will help? Thanks guys, hopefully you can help me get this sorted out... No internet on this PC is killing me.

Yes. BFE was the problem. But since you reinstalled Windows, I'm not providing any further suggestions. Thanks for replying though.
