Same IP recognized? No Internet, various problems.
My family's internet stopped working inexplicably for no reason the other day. This proved to be disastrous for me because I am a college student and had to do a million things on the Internet for school the next day, and was unable to at my home. AT&T came today and gave us a fancy new modem for free. I could not test it in my room to see if it worked since I was at school, but since it worked in every other room in the house, everything seemed fine and that was that. I got home and the Internet seemed to work, we were given a new network name/key to enter. I noticed my internet would occasionally disconnect for 30 seconds here and there, which quickly became annoying during one of my mandatory Skype conferences, and kind of embarrassing. However, I ignored it.
I played Halo4 on my Xbox, which is a wired Internet connection opposed to my laptop's Wireless. I noticed it was extremely laggy in random outbursts, but could not conclude if this was my xbox or just someone else's connection in the game slowing me down. When I came back to my laptop, the Internet went completely haywire. It started disconnecting and connecting rapidly, and when it did connect it would connect to an unidentified network rather than my network. When it would connect to my network and it said I had working Internet, I actually did not have Internet. In addition, I kept getting some funky error saying someone else in my network had the same IP address as me, and that's what was causing it. Also, my network now has numbers after it. At first it was just "mynetwork" then it was "mynetwork 2", now it's "mynetwork 3" and has stayed at 3. I suspect this has something to do with it, like my computer somehow connecting to the same thing over and over again, and the network recognizing like 3 different versions of my laptop. I mean, that's what it seems like. Right now, I have a steady flow of Internet, for about 10 minutes. The longest I have had Internet tonight. I suspect it will discontinue at any second. I removed all of the networks my laptop has ever been on, and reconnected to the wireless network manually. I think that seemed to help my problem, but I am certain the internet will shut out again. Indeed, I went into my registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion/NetworkList/Profiles (I know the slashes are backward) and it recognizes 3 different profiles of "mynetworkname" - one with no number, 2, and 3.
Anyone have ANY insight? This is doubly frustrating for me, as the Internet is absolutely vital for me everyday. If I don't fix it by this weekend, I'll be forced to move into my gf's house for a few days, and I don't want to since she'll be at Coachella and that would suck. Thank ya.
