Found the problem.
When using a 32 bit OS some hosts are happy to accept "/" as the remote host directory and redirect the files to the correct folder. This isn't so when using a 64 bit OS.
Example using Dreamweaver on a 32 bit OS Bravehost.net is happy to accept "/" as the remote directory. Using Windows 7 64 bit the remote directory has to be set to the correct path -e.g. "/web/[domain name]/"
