You have this in your system specs ...
    Antivirus Avast McAfee

You only need one Anti-virus! These programs are resource hogs and will fight for your system's resources (which you don't have a lot of!) They could also fight each other's virus definitions, so please uninstall one of them.

If you choose to uninstall McAfee, follow the guide here: Uninstall McAfee

Now as VistaKing asked, Download DDS from one of these links:
    DDS.com
    DDS.pif
    • Disable any script blocking protection
    • Double click the dds icon to run the tool.
    • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
      1. DDS.txt
      2. Attach.txt <--- will be minimized in the task tray
    • Save both reports to your desktop.

Include the contents of both logs in your next post.

This is what the DDS icon looks like

You have Adware .... let's get rid of the crud.

Download AdWareCleaner AdwCleaner Download to your desktop
1.Right-click on adwcleaner.exe and select Run As Administrator to launch the application.
    2.Click on Delete button.
    3.Confirm each time with OK.
4.Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart. Please post the content of that logfile in your reply.
Note: You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt as well - n is the order number.

After doing the above, download TFC by Old Timer TFC - Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer - Geeks to Go Forums and save it to your desktop.
    Save any unsaved work.
TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser! It will also clear the icons off your desktop
Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista/Windows 7 right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.

I have gone through the motions and posted the resulting files to the Forum. Instead of Avast I have chosen McAfee as it is coupled with an update service. Tried to wipe off all traces of Avast. Start up time has shortened noticeably.

The initial problem of inability to load torrents persists, despite following all the generous suggestions I received.

Cleaned up, removed other garbage and then, using RegEdit removed all instances where
McAfee was blocking. That did the trick.

    Thanks everyone for help.
