Need to set up a home network with Vista, 7 & 8 to share files.

Hi Guys,

I used to be on the Vista forums but either I have even worse memory than I thought and can't recall my user name or it was wiped for non use.

I am trying to set up a home network with the following hardware:
Router: Linksys EA6500
Bridge: Linksys WUMC710
Laptop: HP Pavilion DV6T (15 months old) Vista SP2
Laptop: HP Envy DV6T (New) Windows 7 SP1
Laptop: HP Elitebook 2530p Windows XP Professional SP3
Desktop: Self made Windows 8 basic.

Ideally each computer will be able to see the content on an external hard drive connected to
the HP Pavilion DV6T USB 3.0 port. I'd also like some measure of security with a login or other credential.

I have read so may things, tried so many things that the best approach would be to start fresh but I have no idea where to begin and my brain is fried from trying this, that or the other.

I'd like to find a Guide or comprehensive How To but so far, I have not found one. Something that goes over the services that need to be running on all machines, the settings that should be enabled or disabled in the OS and if each should have a unique user account or the same.

So, can anyone help? I'm even ready to pay for help that get's this done...but I need definitive help from someone that eats, sleeps and breathes this stuff!

Thanks, in advance...

David

EDIT:

I should add, that I can get the Windows 8 computer to "see" the Windows 7 computer and access it's data but I had to remove all passwords from the user accounts and under
Control Panel>Network and Internet>Network and Sharing Center>Advanced sharing settings. Doing the same in Windows 7 did not enable me to access the Windows 8 computer. I see the Windows 8 computer but any attempt to access it gives me this error:
Windows cannot access \\ENVYDV6T Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose. Error code 0x80070035 The network path was not found.

I tried disabling Norton as well as the Windows internal firewalls, it did not help.
