    Internet Connection Sharing help between Vista and Windows 7

    I have a windows vista system that is a laptop and has a wifi connection and an Ethernet port. I am trying use ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) from my windows vista laptop to get internet onto my windows 7 desktop. I plugged my crossover cable to both of the systems, and I turn on sharing on my vista wireless card but nothing happens.

    ipconfig windows vista:

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
    Link-local IPv6 Address: fe80::80af:de5e:1a70:a14%13
    IPv4 Address: 192.168.0.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway:

    ipconfig windows 7:

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
    Link-local IPv6 Address: fe80::e03c:50a4:ab8b:9fc0%23
    Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address: 169.254.159.192
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
    Default Gateway: fe80::80af:de5e:1a70:a14%23

    I noticed that on the windows 7 pc, the IPv4 address is 169.254.x.x instead of the usual 192.168.x.x and the Subnet Mask is 255.255.0.0. Does this make a big difference? And how would I fix this problem? Thanks in advance.

    Ipconfig on vista should give 2 ip addresses!! 1 for LAN and one for wireless. Post both. Also both subnet masks

    is dhcp enabled on lan adapter?
    is network card fine on win7 machine (connect it temporary to router and test). Can it browse websites then? has it ip addres 192.168.1.x then?

    Just to make it clear, ICS is for sharing a wired connection, wired to wired only, and it requires a secondary Ethernet adaptor to work at all, a wireless connection does not figure into the equation.

    AdHoc is for sharing wireless to wireless, there is no such thing as sharing wireless to Ethernet. And I won't argue this point as I already know this as fact.

    It's not a supported configuration at all. The few that have managed to get it to work can't seem to reproduce their miracle of modern networking with any type of reliability.

    Yes this same question has come up a million times before, there are no working tutorials for this and unfortunately nobody has a working solution to make this work, even if they did, it would not work reliably as it's simply not meant to be.

    The best advice I can give here is to purchase a good router, the D-Link DIR-655 is one of the best routers ever made and you can get them for 70 bucks.

    I didn't kown that. Thanx for sharing that info. Strange win7 lets share you the wireless connection using GUI and gives LAN ip address 192.168.0.1!!

    Well I would hate to see you wasting time on this like I already have in the past.

    With these new fangled 3G networks people are always trying to share that using ICS and it just won't work.

    They can however use connectify and share the 3G wireless connection with the other machine by setting up a hosted wireless connection. Connectify - Turn your PC into a Wi-Fi Hotspot and Get Faster Internet

    connectify makes the pc an access point. Wireless clients connect to the wireless pc.

    He wants to connect wired from PCA to PCB. And connect to internet wireless form PCB.

    I just did this as a test. I'm able to share WIFI over same WIFI adapter. But not what OP requested:
    ---
    First, you'll want to enable the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) feature of Windows 7 so the Internet access is shared with users on the Wireless Hosted Network.
    Open the Network Connections window, right-click the network adapter that's connected to the Internet and select Properties. Then select the Sharing tab, check the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection, choose the network connection name of the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter from the drop-down box, and click OK.
    Now open the Command Prompt: click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
    Set the network details:
    netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=YourVirtualNetworkName key=YourNetworkPassword
    Start the Wireless Hosted Network:
    netsh wlan start hostednetwork
    To stop the Wireless Hosted Network:
    netsh wlan stop hostednetwork
    To see the Wireless Hosted Network details, including the MAC addresses of connected users:
    netsh wlan show hostednetwork

    -----
    Create a Wireless Hosted Network in Windows 7 with Connectify

    If you don't want to use commands with the Command Prompt, a more user-friendly way to create a Wireless Hosted Network in Windows 7 is with a third-party tool like Connectify. Start by downloading it from Download.com. Once you open it, you can use the wizard to configure the network name, password, and Internet sharing. Then after you hit the Start button, other computers and devices can connect. You'll see a list of currently and past connected clients on the Connectify window.

    On vista pc:
    • Undo ICS
    • Bridge the wireless and wired adapters. Select both in Network Center, rightclick and do bridge
