    Arris DG860 Touchstone Gateway

    Hi all:

I apologize in advance if this should have gone in the "Hardware" thread but my question does relate more to networking as I just moved into a new home and Time Warner came out and gave me this all-in-one modem/router.

My wife and I stream movies/tv via Netflix and Hulu, I play many online games (PC and PS3), and we both surf the web via PC, iPhone, iPad. We have Time Warner Extreme (30 down/5 up). The router is centrally located in my home and elevated well above the devices receiving the signal.

I have gone through the "Ultimate Router Guide" and am going to tweak a couple settings based on that article. Thank you to the original poster.

Still, when connected via wireless, I suffer occasional but severe buffering while streaming and often times severe lag spikes while playing online PC games (especially DOTA 2). My iPhone will also randomly disconnect from the wifi and when I try to reconnect it tells me it is unable to connect to the wireless source. Strange.

Just wanted to see if anyone had any experience with this specific device and/or if there were any additional tricks I could try that aren't listed on that Ultimate Guide.

    Thanks!

I personally hard wire anything I can to get the best performance.

Your internet connect should be excellent I believe its around the same speeds I get and I never have to buffer. (but I'm also hard wired.)

Have you checked to see if your router is on the latest firmware?

You could also try limiting the number of devices and see if that helps. If it does you could purchase a Access point to help take the wireless load off.

You can also see if your router has any QoS features that could improve your connection.

Thanks for your response Parman. I also try to hard wire most devices (especially for gaming). We just moved into a new home and our current (temporary) setup doesn't allow for wires running all over the floors. The wireless is primarily a temporary fix so I can get my gaming and streaming fix. :)

I did try to look into updating the firmware however I read that through Time Warner and this specific model of router, Arris only releases the firmware updates to the leasing company (TW).

I could not find anywhere online to download firmware for this model and in the router settings I am only able to see which version currently exists.

There were also no QoS features within the router settings.

I may end up just purchasing my own router so I don't have to pay the "lease" fee to TW anyway...

CAN'T WAIT for Google Fiber to get here.
