Function Discovery Resource Publication error 0x80070005

Hi - I'm unable to turn on Network Discovery, and the problem looks like it might be because the Function Discovery Resource Publication Service will not turn on. I have it set to Automatic, but when I try to Start the error 0x80070005 Access Denied error is returned. I am running Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8 - turning that off doesn't help. Thanks for any help you can give.

There are several possible causes for this problem which comes up all the time.

The link below shows many possible solutions, read through the thread and see if you are having similar problems. Check to see if you have the tunnel adaptor problem, posting the ipconfig/all would also be helpful. :)

Hi - thanks for replying. I've followed all of those links and done all that was suggested including:
-making sure all those services listed are set to automatic and started
    -uninstalling Kaspersky completely
    - running sfc / scannow (no issues detected)
    - restarting
    - disabling network adaptors that could cause tunnel adaptor problems

I still get the same error message when trying to start the Function Discovery Resource Publication service, and cannot enable Network Discovery for either Home, Work or Public networks. Also, now that I have removed Kaspersky, I find I cannot turn on the Windows Firewall. The service is set to automatic, but I get an error code when I try to start it. Might a problem with Windows firewall be preventing me from turning on Network Discovery?

Yes if the firewall isn't right then it can also cause this problem. Try going into the firewall settings and look for the default settings button.

Hi - thanks for that suggestion, but unfortunately it doesn't solve the problem either. The Windows Firewall service is set to Automatic, but it cannot be started - trying to do so from the Services screen just results in an error message which begins "Windows could not start the Windows Firewall on local computer..."

Given the FDRESPUB service depends on the Windows Firewall service running, I'd say that's part of the problem . If you look at the system event log in the event viewer, does it give any error or warning indication that matches up to you trying to start the firewall service? If so, what's in those errors or warnings?

    Hi,
I find two entries in the system even log for the time I try to start Windows Firewall Service. Here is the first, an "information" level event:

And here is the second, an "error" level event:

Interesting - looks like it was starting from a stopped state and of course failed, but the event has no failure information other than the start command. We may need to capture a process monitor log of the service being started to figure it out - process monitor can be downloaded from here, and it runs as soon as you open it (you'll need to run procmon.exe as administrator to see the service control data). Once you run it, start the service, wait for the failure, then file > save the log file, zip it up, and upload it / link it here for analysis if you can.

I've followed your instructions and have attached the logfile to this reply. I only tried starting the Windows Firewall service, not the Function Discovery Resource Publication one. Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi cluberti - any more thoughts about this problem? For some reason now I am able to see some of the other computers on our network, but still cannot turn on Network Discovery or the services mentioned before (FDRP and Windows Firewall).
