Urgent help, Internet keeps disconnecting.

Hi guys.

I have a problem that is urgent, and I have decided to ask for help here from the experts.

First of all, my modem is 7 years old. Very old indeed. Since 2 days ago, my internet started to disconnect once every 10 minutes or so on average. Normally it has never been like this,but it may be important to tell you that I have recently downloaded the last patch for a game called League of Legends, patch 3.9, and this could be one of the causes, because other people are also experiencing disconnects while playing.

However, when those people say disconnect, I think it is simply them being disconnected from the game, whereas mine is that my internet is completely disconnected, not just the game.

This is extremely frustrating, my family blames me on this, but to be honest this is beyond my control.

Maybe this would help so I will say it: I followed what one of the moderators said in the league of legends forum, which is to stop the disconnects: I went to services.msc and turned off the "IP helper". Could this have anything to do with it?

So yes, basically this started happening around the time I downloaded the patch. But again, this could be a coincidence, because my modem is extremely old, and all my friends who play this game do not experience the disconnects.

I truly, truly hope someone from here can assist me in this.

See if you can borrow a modem to swap for yours. If everything all of a sudden works, your theory is correct. If it has no effect then you still gotta' keep looking. Also you could try a restore point from before the patch if you have one.

If nobody has a modem to lend try the software fix first. I know that's obvious but ...

Thanks mate for the reply.

Any other suggestions? I am so confused between it being my modem, or the patch itself...

I sadly do not have any other modem to experiment with..

Perhaps the experts in this forum can help me see my internet settings, see if the patch has messed up my net settings or so?

Are you using a modem or a router? Please understand that these are two different networking devices. My apologies if I am being patronising as these two devices are normally mixed up.

If indeed a router rather than a modem are you able to connect another device on the network and then test internet connectivity?

Also please try a clean boot and then test to see if there are any third party applications that could affect the connection. To do so please follow this tutorial - Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

Also please re-enable the service that you have disabled since some core network services are needed for TCP/IP communication. If you do not know what service you disabled or cannot remember then please complete a system restore to a point before you had disabled the service.

Since you have internet connectivity to begin with there is little chance that this problem will be related to your internet settings or IP configuration.

Lastly possibly try to test connectivity when your firewall and A/V is disabled since these can block necessary ports required to play certain online multiplayer games

Sorry guys, no internet is hard....

Anyway, I even bought a new modem....I have contacted my ISP and they are using their engineering team to help with this. I truly have no idea what is causing just drops/disconnects so randomly....why, oh why...

I am about to do the "perform a clean startup" Shadowjk mentioned. What are the side effects, and what will this do?

A clean startup will suppress third party applications from launching immediately

Does the disconnects happen to other machines on the network?

Yes. My laptop, which is also connected to my internet (same modem, just wireless) also experiences dcs.

Alright... The fix did not solve it..

This is truly exhausting...I dont even know what is causing all these dcs...

Please, do you have any more solutions/fix to this? I will try anything.

So yes, this internet is being used my this main computer, my smartphone, my family's laptops, my own laptop etc. They too, can experience dcs. I am pretty sure this means it is the internet/modem.

The modem (most likely a DSL modem) will only provide 1 (one) IP address. To hook multiple devices to it, you cannot use a standard router. Your wireless router usually has 4 Ethernet ports to plug wired devices to. Each will have an address supplied by the wireless router. IP address are like mailboxes. Each device needs its' own. You might also have a problem with conflicting wireless signals. If there are other peoples wireless routers near you, then they could "kick" you off. Go into the control panel of your wireless and change the channel you are on. (there are 11). It makes no difference which one you use as long as someone else isn't on it. Your devices will scan for it. Good luck!

Well, all this time...all this time it has been fine, its just started to happen about 1 week idea why. What you said makes sense but why happen 1 week ago? Something is fishy.

Also how do I go to control panel and change the wireless channel?

And yes, I have a modem/wireless router. All my devices at home (phones laptops etc) use it.
