cannot write to new disk on XP machine

Installed a new disk on my XP machine for backup. In XP the disk is shared, users can change files. My windows 7 machine sees the disk and the files on it, but it cannot open them, and it will not allow to write to the disk. It says I don't have permission. Don't know what else to do from the XP side, and Win7 won't allow me to change permissions for the new drive on the XP machine. My feeble brain has never been able to wrap around the permissions, etc., of Vista/Win7. I know the answer is simple. I just don't know what it is.

For full read/write access it's required that you go into the Security tab on the XP machines new drive and add Everyone to the permissions list, add the check marks for full access etc. The link below explains the process although it may look a bit different on the XP's Security tab.

Thanks very much. Following your instructions, I realized there was a sharing tab but no security tab. I had to go to tools, folders, etc. and uncheck simple file sharing. Wouldn't have gotten there if you hadn't pointed out the tab I didn't have. You might not have given me the entire answer, but you certainly took me right up next to it. Thanks again.

Oh then simple file sharing was also on, I didn't realize that it turned off the Security tab but I haven't messed with XP in so many years I forget these things.

Glad you can access the new drive.
