Windows 7: Set Fixed IP Address Impossible

I'm not sure that using a static IP will make a difference here. It's usually best to use the DHCP reservation list for static IP's in the routers settings rather than messing with IPv4.

It may help to turn off UAC on the Windows 7 machine as this is known to conflict with XP and will cause this type of problem where they can't access each other.

Also using the same user name and password on the XP and Windows 7 machine can make this work. The following link may also be helpful.

Indeed. That's more of a router thing ...

It's already been off for a long time.

Thanks. I've taken a copy of that information. There are no passwords involved. I'm the only user of the machines involved. Bad practice I know, but very convenient!

I think I can leave it as it is now. The fixed IP is holding provided I don't go into the IPv4 setup and hit [OK] with all the fields empty.

Thank you for your time. Most grateful.

Hey, I have a dlink pre N wireless router. From within my network, I can access my router (192.168.2.1), but how do I access my router from outside my network? I did use the address found in "whats my ip" site, but I did not access my router. Also, if I setup my network storage's FTP feature,...
