    LAN speed query

    Hello all;

    I have 2 computers (desktop and notebook) running at home on a network. Both systems are running on Windows 7 Beta ATM. I have a DSL connection running through a Linksys ADSL router (WAG354G), with the notebook running wireless. The question is, theoretically, how fast should the transfer rate be (ca.) I know a lot of it depends on the computers, their speed and their disks, but I am now able to transfer files at approximately 2 MB/sec. Is that ok or does it sound slow?

    Thanks in advance;
    K.

    Thanks for a quick reply. :) Yeah, it's still faster than when I had my old desktop that was running on XP and was trying to transfer files to/from Vista. Uff! I figure the only way to increase the speed would be to get faster hdd's... Like WD VelociRaptors or something. Anyway, thanks. :)

    That sounds very slow. I can transfer files off my 2008 Server to my Win7 RC laptop at around 58 MB/s. I have a gigabit connection between the two, via a Netgear switch, and I have Remote Differential Compression enabled on both systems.

    Remember that if your wireless connection is 802.11g then that's a maximum of 54Mb/s which equates to approximately 6 MB/s, whereas I'm getting 58MB/s via a hardwired link.

    The WAG354G you're using only has 10/100 ports, so the best you can hope to achieve with a hard-wired connection is around 10 MB/s (RDC will help, though).

    If you get interested in upgrading your network, do your homework on the gigabit routers out there. There are ALOT nowadays. Also one small thing is sometimes ignored, unknown, or a pennywise decision is going cheapy on your wires. Get the best. Pay close attention to the Mhz.

    Sorry, I couldn't resist . . . it's "special" Cat-5e cable -- all 59-inches of it. But, please, PLEASE read some of the many customer product reviews at the bottom of the page -- they're priceless!
