Samba shares and Home Premium

Another Samba share problem I'm afraid.

Freecom NAS drive. Shares via Samba.

I took advantage of the cheap preorder of W7. When it arrives I see it's Home Premium. Doesn't bother me as I'm not doing domain type stuff at home. However, I cannot access the files on my NAS!!

Searching around here I see others have had the same problem but have managed to work around it with secpol and LAN Authentication Level. However, these aren't available in Home Premium.

Is there a workaround? A registry hack maybe?

Can't see this going on too long without being addressed via Windows update.

I was v excited to be giving my HTPC a new lease of life. I'm very disappointed to say the least.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Yes I saw that on my searches but wasn't sure what to do. Regedit shows the root is there (ie HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa) but the key LmCompatibility key doesn't exist.

Should I just create it?

Yes, create it, set the value to 2, and reboot.

Many system variables have defaults which are employed in the absence of registry values to set a particular number. By creating the registry value, you get to control the variable in memory.

Created the DWORD and rebooted but still no joy I'm afraid. \\<device> is not accessible. yadda yadda

Hang on! If I bypass the root and go straight to the share, I'm fine. Phew!!

Hey thanks for the point here, I have never played with the registery, can someone give me the full line that must be added to the registry, and where to put it in the registry??

It might be worth seeing if there is an updated firmware for your NAS that uses Samba v3, I had to do this with my Buffalo Terastation.
Samba v3 supports NTLMv2 authentication thus means you don't need to compromise the security of Windows.

I am grateful for this thread, as it enabled me to resolve a very annoying problem.

When I tried to access my samba shares on my Ubuntu server, not only would it fail, but Explorer in Windows 7 home premium would completely fail to function hence forth, requiring a restart to put things right.

I am very impressed with Windows 7, and as a Linux fan and Vista abstainer, I think Microsoft have raised the bar and made a strong case for their long term presence. However, coming from an XP machine and finding that not only is Samba not working as before, but that it completely pwned my Explorer in the process if barfing is more than slightly irritating.
