Strange Computer / Network name... changes depending where i look! VPN

    Hi all,

Im a newbie to the site, but not to computing. I recently built a computer, nothing new there, no issues. But a while ago I was looking for a VPN so that I could watch TV from back home. I decided to get a small prog to back up the vpn to stop internet explorer or any other services from accessing the internet if the VPN dropped off.

Now my issue is this. My computer name, when I go into the control panel looks like this: (1st pic) ykHk - Yeh that's not my name, it was automatically changed. When I go to change my pc name: (2) It says i7-Desktop, which is what it originally said. Yet, when I look in windows explorer: (3) It should be either i7-Desktop or Nick & Em. I have never inputted the weird name ykHk! Picture (4) shows that the SSID is 'Network Profile' when actually it is shown here in (5) to be something different Telstra6D377D etc.

Its a real pain as a lot of online services i.e. online storage stuff detects the 'Computer Name' as ykHk and I can no longer connect to other networked computers/drives etc or vice versa. I used to be able to network print and all sorts.

All of this started when I was looking for a decent VPN back up program. I have uninstalled said programs in order to sort this but these settings / issues never reset themselves. (Ps I now use VPN Check Pro - which is no problems).

Does anyone have any ideas other than - rename the computer, rename the network etc as both of these things, when I go to do them say exactly what I want them to say. Just that the computer seems to secretly think that it is something else!

Any handy, friendly advice would be great, kind regards to all in advance, Hockayak

Oh its put the attachments down as a right mess! Sorry all!

I have listed them and put the words shown at the top of each picture if this helps. Thanks again.

    1) - View your basic network information
    2) - Computer name
    3) - Computer (1)
    4) - General
    5) - View your active networks

I think you might be a bit confused on this.

The User name is what appears to have changed, ykHk somehow is your new User name, not the machine name which are two different things in Windows 7.

I'm not sure how the User name could have changed but somehow you are now using the wrong account.

You are going to have to find the old user account and get it working again, no idea here how this could have happened but I suggest some virus scans etc. because something is pretty messed up here.

The tutorial below will help you find your old User account and may help you to restore this account.
User Profile Folder - Change User Account Folder Name

Also the computer description isn't the same as the computer name, they can both be named the same thing but are separate, you can leave the computer description blank if you want, makes no difference.

    Thanks Chev 65,

If im honest I am confused a bit yes. This pic below shows that it thinks that I am logged on as Nick & Em Right?

I will go through the steps you suggested and get back to you to let the community know how I got on. Its a weird one, i wasn't sure if the VPN somehow changed the user name and network user name (ID or whatever 'network profile' is meant to be) etc in order to protect anonymity through the VPN.

    Anyway, regards, Hockayak
