Cannot access \\computername. You don't have permission....

Hi everyone, this is my first post.
Let me first apologize for my english
I need your help because i'm getting crazy with some computer.
My office lan is quite heterogeneous : some PCs are in a local domain, other not yet.

One computer (let's call it PC-A) is a winxp professional SP2 with a shared folder for wich Guest and Everyone account permission are set up. This computer is not joined to the local domain.

The problem is that some computer (Win7) can access it and its shared folder , others can not.

More specifically i have a pc (PC-B) with Windows 7 Enterprise, not joined to the local domain , with a static ip that can access PC-A both with \\computername and \\ipaddress.
Another pc (PC-C) not joined to local domain, static ip, win 7 enterprise cannot access PC-A in any way (\\computername or \\ipaddress) but the ping works and so the remote desktop on PC-A.

A third PC (PC-D) , with win7 enterprise, is joined to the local domain(with DHCP and DNS server configured) and cannot access PC-A (the same as PC-C) . In local domain a DHCP server provides ip addresses in the same class of other pc in the lan not yet joined.

Hoping i was clear and provided the necessary information.
Can you help me to resolve this problem?

Have you tried making adjustments to the local security policy which would allow access to shares on the XP machine from anonymous users?

This is supposed to help in these situations and is easier than creating a new account for each user that requires access.

The link below shows the adjustments in the Local Security Policy which allows the Everyone permissions to apply to anonymous users.

Everyone group does not include anonymous security identifier

I also found that if i login to one of the PC unable to reach the winXP one with the user Administrator that is also on the WinXP, then i get the prompt to insert username and password and can access the shared folder.


UPDATE: Tried to include anonymous to everyone on the WinXP pc but it doesn't work.
I also installed XPMode on win7 but even from the virtual xp i cannot access the PC-A.
I really don't know what it could be.
The WINXP Pc has no firewall, no antivirus installed.

Yes it's sometimes required that you set up a standard user account on the Windows 7 machine with the same user name and password as is on the XP machine in order to gain access to the User folder.

You should have better luck using the Public folders for this type of sharing. I'm also not completely sure that the Domain isn't part of the problem.

It may help to do this one registry adjustment on the Windows 7 machines that can't access the XP machine.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
create or modify 32-bit DWORD: LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy
set the value to: 1

After a day spent to make test I came to a conclusion : the problem is not on the win7 pcs but on the winxp one (PC-A), and is not a domain problem because other winxp pc outside domain cannot access the PCA.
What led me on the wrong way was the fact that two Win7 pcs access the PC-A, but i didn't notice that the account on those pc are both also on the PC-A. In fact if i create an account on any other pc with the same name of one created on the PC-A, then i can connect remotly to it.
Now i think i know the cause, i have to find the solution. I think it is a question of user rigths.
I want all users to reach the PCA, then i want they to be prompted for the credentials to access the pc.
Tomorrow i will check user account restriction and policy on the PC-A.

Yes having the same user accounts and passwords on the XP machine as on the Win 7 machines is how it's supposed to work.

Although you should be able to use the Public folders for sharing without having to do this. For access to the User folders it's required.

Ok. i solved (i hope so).
as I thought it was a user rights issue.
I supposed the Guest was disabled, as usually is on our lan, but it was not the case for that Xp computer.
Disabling the Guest account has solved the problem.
Now the PC is reacheable from the intranet and users are asked for credentials when they try to login.
Even from domain pc i can access the WinXP (outside domain) , in this case , obviously, when i login i must insert credential in .\username format but it works.
