Help sharing files between Win7 and XP

I've read a lot of posts about this but I am still missing something here...

I have two laptops, one running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit and the other running Windows XP SP3 32bit both connected to the internet through a wireless router. Can someone help me figure out how to share files between them? because at the moment they don't even see each other.

-The workgroups on both are set to "WORKGROUP"
-On Windows 7 the active network is the Work Network
-On Windows 7 the advanced sharing settings have discovery: on, file and printer share: on, public folder sharing: on, encrption set to 40 or 56bit, password protected sharing: off

Any help figuring this out is appreciated!

networking is always a difficult issue to resolve over email.

have you tried resetting the instance and starting over? (set the workgroups up from scratch).

worth a try....

Reading the thread won't help, you need to install the LLDP in order for the XP machine to show up on the network which seems to be the problem you are having now.

From what I have read having simple file sharing turned on for the XP machine can cause problems with sharing.

Check out the following links for proper configuration.

Getting Access is Denied when accessing Windows 7 share from Windows - Microsoft Community

The second answer on the above link solved my issue with a Windows Workgroup network.

The following like is good if you don't want to have to login to get to the desktop in XP.

Configure Windows XP to Automatically Login

Try to access the folders that are shared by default. All Folders on XP and Public on Vista/Windows 7. That saves you from getting side tracked by playing with the sharing permissions of the folders. Once you can drag and drop files both ways between those, the other stuff usually drops into place with maybe one or two tweaks.

The LLDP is already installed if your XP is on SP3 and tells you this if you try to install it.

I can ping my xp from 7 but not the other way around.

Neither computer shows up at all under Network, so I'm not even up to folder sharing issues yet...

In Windows 7 is the network type set to public or private? Counterintuitive as it may seem, if you set it to Public, the access is circumscribed. If you set it to Private, you can share without login. Private in this case meaning only inside your Lan is the stuff accessible.

Does the Windows 7 machine show in IP address on the network? You may want to try static IP addresses in the router if you only have 2 machines.

But then again, I have no eperience yet with wireless. Also I havein't gotten into the IPV6 crap yet. Just a fair warning.

Yes LLDP installs with SP3 so your good there. I believe the sharing would work if those machines could actually see each other on the network.

Are there any anti virus software's installed on the Win 7 machine?

Do both machines have a different machine name? You can use the same user name but not the same machine name.

Is there only one router or one modem/router in this network and not a modem/router then another wireless router?
