Can't access from Win7 to XP shared folder

So yesterday I decided to set up and optimize my home network by creating shared folders and stuff. As an IT student I'm learning about security so I started by disabling all the Home Group config and creating users with passwords and enabling password authentication so everytime I want to access a computer/folder I have to enter an user (I have more than one for when I need only read or write to a shared folder).

The only problem I have is when I try to access XP. I have one XP and three Sevens. In one of the Sevens, when I try to enter the XP shared folder it ask me for an user/password, something like this:

Note: I'm using a workgroup, not a domain.

But on the other two Sevens I can't access XP. It says permission denied, or something, but the thing is that they don't ask for credentials.

I guess is NOT a XP problem, but how can I fix this?

    Thanks.

theres an option for turning on lower security in the advanced settings / file sharing options.. you need to lower the encryption.
    Hope that helps you.

That's not what I want. I actually want that security. And in one of my Sevens it works just fine.

Do all the computers have the same firewall and Anti-virus programs? If not, you may need to fix their permissions.

As far as I know, yes. What's the relation between an AV and the "not asking for credentials" bug?

Look at the computers to see what Anti-virus and firewalls are set up. There may be something different about the Windows 7 that can't access the XP.

There's nothing different there. Maybe some registry key or a very advanced option, but I don't know about that. It's not like I can't access XP, I can actually see the folders without any authentication (I have to login first in the PC that works fine just to see the folders), the weird part is that Win7 won't ask me for credentials...

I had this issue before but have long ago ditched XP so I unfortunately cannot replicate it for you. However, I do remember that it was not antivirus/firewall software related. You didn't say but I'm assuming you are trying to do this networking through a router?

    Things to check...
1: Ensure all computers are on the same workgroup.
2: Ping your XP computer's IP from the working Windows 7 computer, then try the others to see if they can even talk.
3: Try to connect to your Windows 7 computers from XP, instead of the other way around. This is the step I found that commonly works, never found out why though as I left good enough alone.
4: Go deeper than just workgroup settings. Make sure you're on the same gateway and what not(which you should be by default but just make sure).
5: Check for any anomalies in computer and user names for all computers. Eg: spaces, special characters, dashes.

That's all I can recall from those many years ago. Good luck.

    1: Of course...
    2: Yep, everyone sees everyone.
    3: Absolutely yes.
4: The network config is perfectly fine.
5: None that I can see.

I still investigating but if someone knows anything else... this is not about basic things, it's something deeper.

Did step 3 work? Another thing to try is share additional folders on both the XP and one of the non-working Windows 7 computers. Eg: instead of just documents share a folder on your desktop or c:\ drive. If this works you may have to check out the sharing settings on the defaulted share folders.
