I have an environment where multiple rooms with identical Windows 7 computers link to a win2003 active directory controller. One room is having a problem with sharing folders. Intermittently, you click to "share with" and there is a long long delay while it searches for a list of users to share with. Sometimes, it will work instantly. A few minutes later, it will take for ever. It affects all computers in one room only, and the impact is mainly for sql server installations on all the systems in the room. It correlates with not being able to add users to sql server.
The network is a stacked set of cisco 3750 switches, one vlan/subnet per room with cable pulls from the affected room distributed over multiple switches that also contain ports from the rooms that are working. There's a shared trunk that leads to the active directory. There's static IP addressing with no WINS configured. There's no indication of network problems for ping, domain logins, or flex licensing to the domain controller.
We're stumped. We can't see any rational explanation for why this room or why only intermittently. Can someone explain what is actually going on when Windows searches for names when you select "share with" on a folder? Any ideas on what else we can try or questions we haven't asked would be helpful.
