I had a similar issue. Then after a couple of ours it connected. I did nothing different. Then after another couple of hours it disconnected again! I couldn't get it to reconnect so shut down. Like others, the connection is fine with my laptop (running XP).
UPDATE!
So I disabled the security for my router.
And then I tried connecting on the desktop that has Windows 7. And it WORKS.
So what's the issue though? Does Windows 7 not like passwords or something? Again I promise you guys that I was entering in the right passphrase.
Again though it was asking for "network security key"? Is that different that the passphrase that Vista asked for?
If anyone knows anything that can clear this mystery I would greatly appreciate it.
I do not feel comfortable at all with my network being unsecured.

I turned off earlier today after my last post and went to classes. I just got back, turned it on, tried connecting with the passphrase I had chosen after resetting it. Still didn't work. THEN I disabled the security and I was able to connect.
Please update your specs, as I requested early in this thread. Knowing what hardware you have will help diagnose your problem.

For the wireless adapter I'm not too sure who manufactured it. Not 100%. I think it's Lite On but I keep seeing other weird names. Does anyone know a solid concrete way to determine who made the wireless adapter? Because when I go to Sys Info --> Components --> Network and then click on "Adapter" it says:
USB Wireless 802.11 b/g Adapter
Other than that Windows list various network monitors, realtek controller, tunneling adapters, and some WAN Miniport (SSTP)
If you add them to your system specs, people don't have to hunt through the thread to find out what you have.
What wifi card do you have in the HP? Is it an Intel card? This sounds like a problem with your card and not your router. You should be able to find out the manufacturer if you visit HP or maybe a desktop forum.
* edit * I thought you had a notebook - sorry. I don't have a link to a desktop forum, but forum.notebookreview.com should have a link to a desktop forum that might be able to help. You can also open up your desktop and look at the card to get the model number.
Like I said I have no idea. I've tried by looking in system info but all I get is that generic, "802.11 b/g USB Wireless LAN card"
I bought the desktop from HP and I know they use a lot of Intel stuff in their desktops but I honestly do NOT know if it's an intel card for sure.
As for My System Specs I have 3 different PCs...2 laptops and 1 desktop. One of the laptops is my MAIN computer but I'm not going to upgrade it to Windows 7 until I'm sure this thing is stable.
Well, I have WEP encryption on my network, and Windows 7 plays fine with it here. Can you try switching to WEP encryption and test that? (Not suggesting this as a permanent solution, just trying to figure out the problem deductively.)
I am pretty sure that the manufacture IS Lite On.
The HP website lists Lite-On as the USB manufacturer. Where did you get the drivers you used for Windows 7?
I found a blog about the Lite-On USB wifi, and that the actual driver is provided by Ralink. Check out this link for an updated driver (it's up to you to figure out the exact model, which you should be able to do if you uninstall the driver you installed, then let Windows detect it).

Thanks for all the responses. I will try the WEP thing...
As for the adapter I just called HP. Gave up the model number and product ID and the lady told me specifically that the manufacturer is some company called Bluejay.
She said that its a Bluejay adapter and the product number is GT737AV

Just switched to WEP encryption and that worked...I had to enter in that key though which is dumb imo. I can't remember random numbers and letters. It was so much easier in Vista....
Surely Windows 7 works with WPA-Personal. I should NOT have to use WEP (which is less secure) for my wireless network. I have a dual band router too. One at the 5GHz freq and the other at the 2.4. I was using WPA2-Personal for the 5 and WPA-Personal for the 2.4...
Again though I switched the security settings to WEP, put in a passphrase and hit "generate". That outputted 4 "keys". Then I entered key 1 and it worked....
Still though I would like to get it working with WPA and WPA2 if possible.
