An error occurred while trying to share D. Incorrect function.

OK, at first I thought it was a Norton 360 problem so I deleted Norton 360. The Windows firewall is no longer being controlled by it.

Windows firewall is turned off, it's a public location, printer and file sharing is turned on, discovery is on, I reloaded the default settings for the firewall, the owner is administrator which my login is set for. Didn't matter if the Windows firewall was turned on or off, I still got the error message above.

I used to have D shared but took it off. Now when I try to create the share I get the error message above.

I have another Win 7 Pro computer with the same settings as above and I can share everything just fine.

Any ideas on how I can fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Suggest you follow the direction in the link in order to remove Norton entirely from your system.

Can you verify if Network Discovery is staying turned on, the Windows firewall needs to be on as well.

My reading of Eric99's difficulty is that he cannot set files to be shared (I have this same problem). The suggestions Chev65 is making are directed toward other computers finding the files after they have been shared. I don't have that problem. Some of my files are already shared and I can find them with other computers. I just can't share any new files. When I try I get this "Incorrect function" error.

MarvWE: It's probably better to start your own thread describing the issue on your machine.
This thread is a few months old and it was started by eric99

It gets somplicated and confusing for everyone when two or three people are trying to get their issue resolved - it can be quite a mess figuring out what screenshot belongs to who...

       Information

    • For how to upload a screenshot or file, read here
    • If you are requesting help with a BSOD crash, then please try to provide the info outlined here
    • Please help us to help you by filling in your System Specs (see How to - System Specs).
    • If your problem is solved please use the Mark this thread as solved link at the top of your thread.
    • Please take a minute to read our Forum Rules
    • Do not hijack other peoples threads asking for help with similar problems to your own, you need to create a new thread of your own.

You might have missed the Information box I recreated above. Most people do, so don't sweat it.

There is some valuable information sprinkled around the forum, take some time, look around and find stuff that will make it easier to help you solve the issue on your machine.

I've bolded two things in the same info box - everybody misses them and I end up typing a lot.

    Thanks.

Thank you for your advice Slartybart. I would like to point out that my problem is *exactly* the problem that eric99 identified lo these many months ago. I do not digress. Rather, I return to the point.

A second point is that it is so difficult to find answers to what ought to be simple problems. I have two computers in my house. One runs System 7 and one System 8. I would like to share files and printers. I changed the hard drive on one machine and now many things do not work. All of my old shared files are still shared but I cannot share any new files. I cannot share my printers.

Please don't advise me to go through the recommended steps for sharing. I have done it, with all the variations I can imagine, about 20 times. I have tried workgroups and homegroups. No matter, I get the message that I cannot share my file. I have used "share", "Advanced Share", and the sharing wizard. I get the messages "Your folder can't be shared", "An error occurred while trying to share <folder>. Incorrect function. The shared resource was not created at this time." and other variations.

Even though this problems has a long history and is well-described by many users, it has not been addressed properly. Responders usually digress into describing how sharing works or listing the required steps, or addressing the problem of what to do when an object is shared but cannot be identified by a remote computer. None of this is helpful.

You urge me to read carefully. I can assure you that I have read both widely and carefully, and tried every plausible solution that I have seen.

I would be nice if someone with a deeper knowledge of how microsoft handles sharing could consider this problem and make some useful suggestions. I certainly would appreciate it.

All I was saying was that
you might get better response on a thread of your own, and
here's how the forum works best [info box]

I hope you find a solution to the issue.

I work in a place with numerous technicians and I have the authority to ask them to help me, which I did. But without joy. I called them off after a day. They seemed to think that it was the failure of one of the Service modules.

So I formatted my C drive and reinstalled Windows. It took me almost a day to run all the updates and reinstall all of my apps. But now sharing works as advertised. And having tried so many times, I am now something of an expert on how sharing works, when it is working, so that part was easy.

Still, it is disappointing that a solution could not be found using this extended period of time and with access to all of the experts on this network. And also disappointing that the sharing system in Windows is so fragile.
