Windows 7: W7 starts fine then stops seeing XP machine

W7 starts fine then stops seeing XP machine

When I start both computers they are fine. the Windows 7 machine sees the XP one and vice versa. two/three hours later (with no activity), the Windows 7 machine can no longer see the XP one. the Windows 7 is a Compaq, the XP an elderly Dell USFF. The switch is a Netgear GS108

Please note this is a private wired network with none of the machines connected to the internet, thus security is not a problem.

I have
1) Stopped both machines from sleeping
2) Disabled the power control from the network cards
3) Disabled the firewall

I do occasionally get a message regarding the IP address not being valid
I have some thin clients on the network, they are unaffected by the problem, they see both Windows 7 and XP machines perfectly.
Resetting the network adapter solves it - but I want to avoid it happening at all.
