improving wireless range for Wii U (other devices)

You could try setting up one the old WRT54G as an access point. It would have to be placed into a better position for the Wii to pick it up and that would require a wire.

You would also need to disable DHCP on the secondary router, eventually the second router will pick up an IP from the first one in the correct subnet, at that point you can access the secondary router at it's newly assigned IP and set up the wireless settings SSID, security, broadcast channel as required.
