ive used 1.0.0.2 for years. probably assigned by ISP
i have DHCP
router is 1.0.0.1 I assume(?)

on 1.0.0.2: ping 1.0.0.2
on 1.0.0.3: ping 1.0.0.3

On any other connected machine (connected to router): ping 1.0.0.3 and ping 1.0.0.2. works?

Private network - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For small home subnets you should use a class C network.
192.168.0.* for example. Or 192.168.1.*
So 192.168.x.* (x=0 to 255). Give router ip=192.168.x.1. Subnetmask 255.255.255.0

1.0.0.2 is not a reserved address... maybe it's the ip address of some regular website.

Seeing the router IP stated as 1.0.0.1 has me thinking that this is more likely to be 10.0.0.1, which is a reserved private address, I think it was originally designated for small buisiness use with the 192.168.x.x assign for private individauals

Of course as the 10.0.x.x range is a private range there is no issue with anyone using it as any packets that make it onto the net will be rejected at the first router outside the home

That's why asked the make and model of the router, to check which private address range it uses by default.

the new modem is an Actiontec mi424rw rev 1 from verizon uses the 192.168.1.x numbers.
No reason for the numbers them selves to be a problem.
maybe hostname mapping bug cause Synergy uses hostnames

modem that works is a netgear.
and yes its 1.0.0.1 not 10.0.0.1

Yes, there is a reason. The address 1.0.0.1 belongs to APNIC Pty Ltd in Australia.

You want a private IP address, not a public IP address.

Vze gives you one set 192.168.1.x which is in the 192.168 domain and has a subnet of 1 and a host addr x

The easiest way if to configure the netgear router in the same domain and but with a different subnet

192.168.2.1

How you configure the router depends on how the router is connected to other devices.

Maybe a few more questions:
How do you connect to the Internet - wired or wireless?
Is the Netgear router involved in getting to the Internet?

How about this - could you draw a simple diagram of how teh Vze, Netgear and two pcs with teh mouse app?

What is the mouse app?

Thanks for the feedback on the routers and 1.0.0.1 vs 10.0.0.1

I'm going to take a stab and guess that all this worked before you got the Vze router, which kind of tells me that your network was isolated. Just a guess.

At any rate, 1.0.0.1 is not a private address - you want a private address.

turns out it was the firewall.
New modem was a new network and the rule for the port
had to be added.
I had the wrong way to disable the firewall which led to the confusion.
explains the packets showed up in the trace but PC
doesnt see it . they are blocked.
