what is talking to the internet

Hi Folks. I got rid of Kas13 but I did like the ability to see what was happening with my internet connections. I don't really understand what Ports are what and who should be where and when but I would like to be able to check on who is talking to the net from my computer. I keep all but essential programs and processes on manual start-up and have reduced start-up items in Config to absolute minimum but I can never be sure what is happening behind my back. How do I monitor this activity. I suppose I should also ask 'How do I understand it' too, but that is a request too far I suspect.

W7's Resource Monitor > Network tab > TCP Connections should tell you enough info. It is more informative (in my opinion) if the service named Dnscache (DNS Client) is disabled.

Thank-you that is exactly what I was looking for. I figured it would be there somewhere. If I was sensible and I had the time I would read an instruction manual on W7 although I suspect I would run out of memory very quickly. Shutting down the DNS Client did make a big difference; is it OK to leave it disabled?

I don't miss the DNS service. But you should keep a log of changes that you make so that you can set them back when troubleshooting. Some had said that turning off that DNS service impacts Network Discovery - I've just not seen that happen.
