This has to be something with Windows 7 itself and the (Intel) chipset I have. I don't know. Very frustrating
Sorry you didn't have any luck either but i wasn't surprised

With some advice i've been further troubleshooting, and even in Safe Mode i get the issue. The list of things i've ruled out as being a possible cause is growing. The fact that this issue occurs in safe mode, with only the core windows 7 services running, and on both Intel and Realtek NICs points to a very deep cause though i'm at a loss as to what it could be. I am going to try running utorrent in different compatibility modes, followed by flashing to my board's newest bios. I don't hold out hope for any of this to be helpful but i want to cover all bases.

A little help

Hi everyone. I've been using this post to try to find an answer to this problem, but the problem always reappeared. Then I went to talk with Microsoft, and the gave me a solution, that has worked fine for me. They say that it is one of the programs that runs on startup that is causing the disconnection. Follow this plan, and maybe you'll be helped:

Action Plan:

Step 1: Perform a clean boot

Note If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps. We strongly recommend that you do not use the System Configuration utility to modify the advanced boot options on the computer unless a Microsoft support engineer directs you to do this. Doing this may make the computer unusable.
a. Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights. b. Click Start , type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration Utility.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue . c. On the General tab, click Selective Startup , and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.) d. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all .

Note Following this step lets Microsoft services continue to run. These services include Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, Error Reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you may permanently delete all restore points. Do not do this if you want to use the System Restore utility together with existing restore points. e. Click OK , and then click Restart . Step 2: Enable half of the services

a. Follow steps 1a and 1b to start the System Configuration utility. b. Click the Services tab, and then click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box. c. Click to select half of the check boxes in the Service list. d. Click OK , and then click Restart . Step 3: Determine whether the problem returns

If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Service list.

If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Service list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.

If only one service is selected in the Service list, and you still experience the problem, the selected service causes the problem. Go to step 6. If no service causes this problem, go to step 4.
Step 4: Enable half of the Startup items

a. Perform a clean boot by repeating step 1. b. Click the Startup tab, and then click to select half of the check boxes in the Startup Item list. c. Click OK , and then click Restart . Step 5: Determine whether the problem returns

If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Startup Item list.

If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Startup Item list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.

If only one startup item is selected in the Startup Item list, and you still experience the problem, the startup item that is selected in the list is the service that is causing the problem. Go to step 6.

If no startup item causes this problem, a Microsoft service most likely causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service may be causing the problem, repeat step 1 and step 2 without selecting the Hide all Microsoft services check box in either step.
Step 6: Resolve the problem

After you determine the startup item or the service that causes the problem, contact the program manufacturer to determine whether the problem can be resolved. Or, run the System Configuration Utility, and then click to clear the check box for the problem item.
Step 7: Reset the computer to start as usual

After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:
a. Click Start , type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue . b. On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK . c. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart . How to start the Windows Installer service when system services are not loaded

If you run a Setup program without starting the Windows Installer service, you may receive the following error message:
The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. Contact your support personnel to verify that the windows Installer service is properly registered.
The Windows Installer service does not start if you clear the Load system services check box. To use the Windows Installer service when system services are not loaded, you must start the service manually. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start , right-click Computer , and then click Manage .

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue . 2. In the console tree, click Services and Applications , and then click Services . 3. In the details pane, right-click Windows Installer , and then click Start .
Please disable the anti virus and firewall settings if any

Can I ask which program or service was causing your problem?

Having ruled out all services and third party programs by experiencing the problem on both a clean install before any other programs are on the system, and in safe mode, i can't see this helping me. As far as i know in Safe Mode all but the core services etc are disabled.

Also, how did you get in contact with microsoft? I'm not sure the best way to go about it.

I've kept the pci-e Intel nic in and it just happened again. I tried changing my DNS servers, which had no effect. When the NIC disappears usually my memory usage spikes and I can't open any other explorer windows or even click restart. I though I would mess around a bit so I went into task manager, clicked users, right clicked on my account and clicked disconnect (log off would not work), it put me back at the login screen where I logged in again. After doing this my NIC reappeared in the networking tab and I could go online, yet my memory usage was still at 80-90%, event viewer failed to load giving me some error. This time I could actually restart without pressing the reset button on my computer.

After rebooting I looked in event viewer I found these:

Intel(R) Gigabit CT Desktop Adapter
Network link has been disconnected.

The server {AB8902B4-09CA-4BB6-B78D-A8F59079A8D5} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

The server {73E709EA-5D93-4B2E-BBB0-99B7938DA9E4} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

The server {06622D85-6856-4460-8DE1-A81921B41C4B} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

The server {CEFF45EE-C862-41DE-AEE2-A022C81EDA92} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

The Diagnostic System Host service terminated with the following error:
Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.
I really don't know what to do here besides dropping the cash for a new motherboard / cpu. If anyone has any type of contacts at Microsoft please point them to this thread.

scottyd, I think you may have some third party application(s) that are causing a connection problem with the server. This driver works with Vista, but it's still 2 years old.

This happened with my built in Marvell network adapters also. It doesn't seem like a driver issue. You think that older driver might work even though it's not for Win 7? Right now I'm on the latest driver available.

Nero 'calls home' to activate ... this may be happening to you. It might not be connecting, so it could be causing the loss of your Internet.

Now THAT is an interesting bit of information for me. Just to clarify, your wireless Internet connection drops periodically and troubleshooting generally recommend that you reset your adapter? Or are your issue different?

Thanks,
