Permissions in Sharing, what is this?

    Hi,
I am going to purchasing a Smart TV which will have access to my pc over the home network. So I'm going thru my pc to determine which files I may want to share with it, i.e., Music, Photos, Videos, etc.

I have recently developed problems with sharing my desktop pc with my laptop. After spending several hours on several days to try to get the Homegroup and/or network sharing to work, I've eliminated the Homegroup and installed a Remote Desktop software so I don't have to go thru all those difficulties. But that's another story.

So, my query today is what are the Account Unknowns under Permissions -

C:\Users\MyName\all folders have locks on them
(I know how to remove the locks, I put them there when the above problem couldn't be resolved)

    MyName>Properties>Security tab>
    Everyone
    System
    My Name (Computer name\MyName)
    Administrators (Computer name\Administrators

The above all have full permissions

    Account Unknown(S-1-5-21-2601253855-1200907314-856597340-1200
This is listed twice and with no permissions - I've removed this is the past but it is obviously back - what is it and where did it come from?

    Thanks

I have a similar account (different string of numbers) under the "My Pictures" properties, only with Read & Execute, List Folder Contents and Read permissions. I also have a HomeUsers account under the same folder permissions, again it has the same permissions as the previous account, and I also have the WMP Network Sharing Service which only has Read permissions.

Quite what the account is for I'm unsure, it may be a Microsoft account (can't see it being a PC Manufacturer account since I built mine myself) or it may be a Computer Security account, it may have been created by say Symantec so they can remotely access your computer (with your permission) if you've asked their support for assistance.

As for sharing with Smart TV's, I have no experience there since I've had enough difficulties getting my Windows 7 PC to speak to Windows Server 2012 shares.

Hope this helps you out a bit :)

    Hi rthomas268,
If you put your files & folders in the location as in my pdf and make a change to the default location, it will work without having to worry about permissions. File sharing 2.pdf

Those are the permissions left over from when you set up the Homegroup. Nothing to worry about really but removing them can cause problems with sharing in the Homegroup if you still have one set up.
