Workgroup/network sharing Mac OS X(I have searched)

I cannot get this to work for the life of me. I have searched this forum, and others.

-I have set the workgroup identically on my windows 7 machine and my 10.6 MBP.

-I CAN smb to my windows 7 machine successfully.

-Neither my windows 7 or mac os x recognize one another in their respective network "browsers"

-With iTunes open on both machines, it successfully recognizes the libraries.

I am not a networking genius, but I'm fairly literate if someone could help me out, please.

This could be a whole separate issue, but even when connected to my windows 7 machine through VPN, the machines don't show up on their respective network "browsers"

1. What do you mean by network browsers?

2. You gave the same network name on both machines?

3. Have you created at least one shared folder on the machines?

4. Do you have them connected through a router?

5. DCHP or fixed ip's?

6. Can the machines ping each other?

7. Can you post a command prompt after entering ipconfig /all,
and respective command on the mac?
(I don't know abything about mac's.)

Just the networks "maps". So in the windows 7 my computer, under the network, the MBP doesn't show up.

2. You gave the same network name on both machines?
Both are connected to my router and both are under the same workgroup name

I do have a shared folder

4. Do you have them connected through a router?
Yup

5. DCHP or fixed ip's?
DHCP but I know the IP's through router interface

6. Can the machines ping each other?
I successfully pinged the MBP

7. Can you post a command prompt after entering ipconfig /all,
and respective command on the mac?
(I don't know abything about mac's.)

Not sure what you're looking for exactly here...

On the W7 machine, go to start -> in the searchbox type cmd (press enter)

in the command prompt window type ipconfig /all

Is there a way to ping from the mac to the W7?

Another thing.
If you have firewalls on either machine, please disable them,
and see if the machines can see each other.

I was able to ping the windows machine from the Mac... Tried disabling the firewalls

Okay, now for some reason, my w7 machine sees my MBP but my MBP still does not see my w7. Haha, unreal, I've messing with this all day.

That reason is the firewall I presume?

Can't help you on the mac, but maybe there's a firewall running there?

Actually I don't believe it was the firewall as I re-enabled it and I still could connect to the MBP. I cannot connect to my W7 though still other than through smb.

I suspect it is something on the mac, but like I said, I know nothing of macs.

Look for something that allows or disallows network discovery.

I'm in the same boat...
For clarification: On MacOS shared windows folders are visble by themselves if the mac has access to it. In the Finder there's a heading "Shares" where visible Windows machines are listed.

I have a 2003 server here, also with shares, it shows up fine (shares are "everybody/change")
I *had* XP with shares, the machine was listed on the MBP.

Now I have windows 7, with the same folder shared as before, and it's not listed on the MBP.
I can however, in the finder do a "connect with server" (which is the same as "map network drive") and connect to the Win7 share with smb://User:Password@win7-pc.

Seems something changed with the smb handling in Win7...
