Computer does not show up in network but it can be accessed

    Hi guys,

I recently got a new wireless router and start setting up the local network.

When I first set it up both computers showed up in Network Places. However, after I restarted my laptop, the Desktop PC does not show up on the laptop.

I have a shared folder mapped on the laptop and I can access it and I also can access the desktop PC in address bar using //NAME and //NAME/FOLDERS.
When I do this, the desktop PC temporarly shows under network in the explorer bar in the left and I can expand it and view the folders but still not showing in the Network Places window.
When I close the window (//DESKTOP/PC), the device disappears from explorer.

On both computers I set the Network Discovery / Sharing to ON and in my firewall (Norton Firewall) both devices are set to SHARED & FULL TRUST.
I also deactivated the firewall completely but no luck.

The only difference is that the wireless network the laptop is connected to is set to Home while the wired one the desktop is connected to is set to Public.

    Any ideas?

Also, can anyone explain to me what kind of connection type should I chose for devices connected to a wireless router? This includes wired devices as well.

It's kind of counterintuitive, but in Windows when you set the network type to Public you are saying it's in a public place, like a kiosk, so hide everything. Try setting the desktop to the same type as the Laptop.
