Different NetBIOS names returned by ping & nbtstat commands!

    Hi Everyone,

I have a Windows 7 (Professional - 32 Bit) client computer connected to my Domain (Windows 2008 R2 Server) and I am getting inconsistent NetBIOS names returned when issuing different commands across the network.

The client computer has the following details when viewed through Administrative Tools > DNS (from the Server).

When I issue the ping command with the 'a' switch to 192.168.170.154 I get the following result.

Notice above that the name I am seeing for this computer is 'core2-xp-graeme...", but I should in fact be seeing 'I5-ROB-W7...'. If I issue the nbtstat command I see correct results for the NetBIOS name, as can be seen below.

If anybody has any idea of why this is happening can you please let me know?

    Kind Regards,

    Davo

    Hi All,

I have the answer here, an I.T. Guru that I have the pleasure of working with pointed out that the Reverse DNS lookups are incorrect.

I plan to manually delete the entries I know to be wrong, and I expect to get acceptable results from ping requests thereafter.

    Kind Regards,

The DNS reverse look up manager seems to be tied in with the static IP of a particular machine.

So it seems that if you changed a user name on a Domain PC with a static IP then the DNS pointer needs to be changed as well.

I'm thinking only the Admin of the Domain would know where to look for this so it's good you asked him about that.

    Thanks for sharing Mr. Davo.
