Still Unable to Access Parts of Music Collection

This is soooo annoying. Our CD collection is ripped to a secondary data drive. Recently, after a fresh install of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 (dual-boot) we can only access some of the folders (they're organised into Blues, Celtic, Classical, Jazz/Big Band, Rock & Pop, etc.). Have tried taking ownership, adjusting permissions, etc. and that gave us more access than we had, but still can't get Windows Media Player or VLC to play over 300 of our ripped CDs. The problem occurs in both Win 7 and Win 8.1. Did the "Sharing" settings, "Permissions", and so on but it's still hit and miss when we try to play this album or that album.

Is there some definitive method to gain complete control of all the music folders for playback and for sharing on our Homegroup?

have you tried changing the permissions using the actual administrator account? By that i mean actually enabling the administrator account and logging on as that and then trying to change the permissions etc?

Is it the parent folders (Blues, Pop, etc.) or files within the parent folders (actual album or song) that you can't access?
