Windows 7: Remote Desktop Connection Verifies then "Disconnects"

Remote Desktop Connection Verifies then "Disconnects"

I use "disconnects" in quotes because there is never really a connection that seems to be made. I used to be able to connect my laptop (running Win 8) to control my desktop (running Win 7 HP) after installing a patch. I just restored Windows 7 HP on my desktop though, and after doing some different patching, I was able to get my laptop to at least recognize the desktop in RDC and allow me to put in a user name and password. However, this time when the user name and pw are recognized and accepted by RDC on the laptop it reverts back to the main RDC window and it appears as though no connection happened at all. No new windows are opened, even briefly.

I followed this guide to set up the desktop, but I used the file from this site since I am running Windows 7

Any advice? Any other guides you might recommend for me to receive a RD connection request on Win 7 HP ?
