path name to a network share? for WMC recording to another PC

    What is the exact format?

I want to change the default recording path from this local folder to a network share in the WMC registry entry.

My idea is to have WMC record onto a remote PC across the gigabit LAN.

I think this will work ?

To access a share by UNC.. \\hostname\sharename[\filepath]

For example, if your server is called "My server" and the share name is "Movies" you would access it as \\myserver\movies.

If you had a folder off of movies called Thriller, the unc would be \\myserver\movies\thriller

There's a fundamental explanation here.. UNC Path Names in Windows - Universal Naming Convention

If you have mapped a drive on your PC to that share it would simply be the drive letter that you mapped.

On my PC I have several drives mapped to a computer called "Server". See attached image.

Point default locations on your computer to point to the server at login can be done by adjusting the Shell Folder locations, as I have done, which are stored in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell folders and a couple of other locations. Changing these can be problematic and I'd recommend against it unless you have a major need for this.

Either way, make sure your permissions are correct or neither the UNC or mapped drive methods will work.

I found out WMC can not do that without lots of help.

There is a storage pooler program I am going to try which says can do that, record TV on a network share.

    Really? It worked for me.

Well, at least it looks like you have a solution.

Best of luck with that. Hope it works for you.
