    Opendns will not work.

Hi everyone out there, I am attempting to use open dns. I have followed the directions to the letter for making it work with my router:

    https://store.opendns.com/familyshie.../dlink-dir-655

I have done everything it stated, cleared all cahces etc and it will not work. The testing sites all fail, even after restarting and manually clearing all caches. I am just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on things to try before submitting a report ticket with them?

    Those are unfamiliar DNS addresses.

    Try these, in this order
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220

They are what I'm using. And when I was using a DIR-655 a couple of years ago I used the same addresses I listed above and they worked.

EDIT: IF you do report a ticket you will need to download their diagnostics tool and run the tests, then send them the URL provided at the end of the test report.

This is the URL for the Diag tool: https://support.opendns.com/entries/...stic-Tool-Link

I concur, those are the wrong IP addresses for Open DNS. The DIR-655 will have no problems using the correct DNS IP's for Open DNS. :)

It looks like those do not include the family options though.....and I got it right from opendns website.

I just tried the ones mentioned and those did not work ether. What the heck am I doing wrong?

Are the directions not right ether?

    Hi Andrew,

Its been a while since I used my DIR-655.
I will pull it out of retirement and give this a try myself and will post the configuration pages/info soon.

    Tanya

EDIT: Just had a thought... The DIR-655 is a router only. So you have it connected to a modem. I assume you are running that in bridge mode...

So have you applied the DNS Settings to the modem?

Family shield has a sign up system, have you tried signing up and entering your email address Andrew?

That is about the only reason I see for this not to work.

Bridge mode would only be required if the modem is a modem/router rather than just a modem.

Correct. Such as when using DSL. I assumed that is his connection type. For cable I used the Motorola Surfboard 5100. Just a modem. No router, no bridge.

But for DSL, pretty much most of the modems I've come across are modem/routers and need to be configured to run in bridge mode to use a multi-port router. If Andrew were running a multi-port DSL modem router (Such as the 2740B or 2870B), then he'd have no need of a DIR-655.

Anyway, since you now seem to have the matter in hand, I'll step back again.

Sorry, here is some info. I have a Motorola cable modem for Comcast service, and the router. I feel stupid, but do I need to make the change on the modem too? (My feeling is yes since I am having problems) If so, I can't seem to find a way to access the modem page....

And yes, I put in my email and followed all the directions on what it told me to do, but it will not work.....Cleared all browser history, flushed dns, and restarted router, modem, and pc.

    Nothing.

Sorry, As chev65 pointed out, I was wrong about the bridge mode. I've never seen a cable modem that had user modifiable settings (At least for me, the ISPs configured them when they installed them).

Don't feel stupid. Leave that for me. I assumed you were using DSL. Bad assumption on my part.

To be honest, I don't think it would hurt to check with your ISP re those settings.

But Chev might have a better [and possibly quicker] idea.

Unfortunately, I still cannot get it to work. It looks like I might go ahead with a support ticket with them.

EDIT: Submitted a ticket. My friend is having the same issue with another router and they sent a message in two. Hopefully one of the responses will solve the problem!
